"I’m Dying To Be With You" | John 16:1-33

Scripture Memorization:

“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world” – John 16:33
Jesus continues his discourse with his disciples before he prays. He reminds the disciples that he is telling them all these things so they do not fall away. He tells the disciples that he must go away and that will be to their advantage because he will send the Helper (The Holy Spirit). When the Holy Spirit comes he will convict the world concerning and sin and righteousness and judgment. The Holy Spirit will also reveal Jesus. Jesus’ disciples will experience sorrow when Jesus is crucified but soon the sorrow will turn into joy when Jesus will resurrect and they will see him once again. Ending his discourse with a triumphant statement, “But take heart; I have overcome the world,” Jesus wants his disciples to know that although they will be tested and tried in the absence of their teacher, Jesus has already conquered that which will be burdensome to his disciples and the Holy Spirit will help them when they need it.

1)"When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”(v.13-15)

a)The Holy Spirit reveals Jesus.

i)One of the reasons for the Spirit to be released from heaven and into God’s people is to reveal Jesus.

ii)John 1:32-34 – “And John bore witness: ‘I saw the Spirit descent from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of god.

b)How has God’s Holy Spirit revealed Jesus to you?

c)How has the Holy Spirit guided you into all the truth?

d)Who does the Spirit glorify? How can you glorify Jesus through the Holy Spirit?

2)The Holy Spirit is a constant topic in the Book of John. In John 3:34, the Holy spirit speaks through men.

i)John 3:34 – “For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for the gives the spirit without measure.”

b)Based on this verse what can you say about the authors in the Bible? Who sent them? What is their message?

c)God gave us his word, written by different men in different centuries. Are you reading his word daily?

d)What does it tell you about the word of God, which was written thousands of years ago, is still applicable today?.

3)When we worship God, this is something that can only be done by the Holy Spirit in us.

i)John 4:23-24– “But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God isspirit and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.

a)Worshiping God must be done in spirit and truth. How can you do this?

b)List ways in which our spirits can connect with God?

c)List ways in which we can know the truth about who God is.

4)The Holy Spirit dwells in Christians.

i)John 7:37-39– “On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, ‘If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believes in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.”

a)In John 16, Jesus says it is to our advantage that he leaves and sends The Helper? Why is this?

On earth, Jesus was limited in a human body and could not be in more than one place at once. Leaving the earth and sending his Spirit is to our advantage because the Spirit is poured out on every believer where Jesus in his physical body cannot do this.

b)What does it tell you about God that after Jesus will leave, he send the Spirit of God?

c)Why do we need the Holy Spirit in us?

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another helper, to be with you forever, even the spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you”

a)Loving God and keeping his commandments is tied to the Holy Spirit? Why do you think this is?

i)We cannot keep God’s commandments unless the Holy Spirit is in us.

b)According to this verse, why does the world not have the Holy Spirit?

c)According to this verse, why do disciples have the ability to have the Holy Spirit?

b)Jesus will not leave us as orphans? What can you say about Jesus after reading that statement?

6)The Holy Spirit Brings People to Jesus.

a)What is the chief goal of the Spirit in this verse?

b)If the Spirit is in us, what will He cause us to do?

c)Are you taking advantage of opportunities that the Holy Spirit gives you to bring people to Jesus?

d)Who has the Holy Spirit told pointed you to for sharing the gospel?
