~ FROM THE PASTOR'S DESK ~

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jesus called His disciples and He calls us today to, “follow Him.” This is important to remember that we are called to follow Jesus, not walk side-by-side, or even lead. We are called to follow, to imitate the Master in the accomplishment of the Father’s Will. We cannot lead the way, for we are not capable of fulfilling God’s Will in the manner and way we so choose. We are not in charge of our salvation or redemption. We are invited to participate and enjoy a relationship with God by following the path Jesus marks out for us and by modeling our lives after His. Let us listen to His invitation and live our lives as did Jesus; in fulfillment of all that the Father wills.

This morning at the 9:30 Mass at Holy Rosary, the Rite of Acceptance into the Order of the Catechumens will be celebrated for Heidi Michelle Miles, who will be receiving the Sacraments of Christian Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist) at this year’s Easter Vigil. Let us together join in prayer and support for Heidi as she continues her journey toward the reception of these sacraments at the Great Vigil of Easter.

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity continues through Thursday, January 25th. This year’s theme is: “Your Right Hand, O Lord, Glorious in Power”(Exodus 15:6). During these days we are encouraged to pray for Christian Unity that the prayer of Jesus may be realized that we all may be one and united as members of His body.

Tomorrow, January 22nd, is the Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children. Join with me this day in special prayer that unborn children may have the legal right for life and that the laws of our nation will realize and reflect God’s will in this and all matters of justice and morality.

~ PRO-LIFE MARCH THIS EVENING ~

The 17th annual ProLife March will be held at 5:00 PM Sunday, January 21st at Holy Rosary's KC Hall. There will be a brief prayer service then the candlelit March from the Hall, down Main St. to the railroad tracks then back for fellowship and refreshments. All are encouraged to attend.

~ STEWARDSHIP ~

The first disciples of Jesus in today’s Gospel left their work and their daily routines to follow Him. Theyabandoned their livelihoods, familiar surroundings and the lives to which they had become accustomed to be closer to Him. The good steward finds ways to be removed from what may be a comfortable existence or daily routine in order to serve the Lord more faithfully. All too often, out offear, insecurity or even selfishness, we refuse to leave the safety of the little world we have created for ourselves in order to hear the Lord’s call and be challenged by HisGospel. Perhaps we should reflect on what comforts we need to sacrifice in order to be better stewards of God’smercy, compassion and hospitality He planted within us.

~ 2018 CATHOLIC STEWARDSHIP GOAL UPDATE ~

We’re nearing the end of this year’s Catholic Stewardship Appeal. For all those who have chosen to join their diocesan brothers and sisters by making a commitment to this year’s campaign, we thank you very much. Opportunities will continue to be available to those who have not yet made a pledge. If you no longer have a pledge card, look for a CSA envelope in church at the end of the pew, or in the back of church—or go online to diojeffcity.org. Any gift you can make will be greatly appreciated.

As of January 15th, 40 families of St. Stephen have donated $7,301.00 (91.26%) of the Diocesan Stewardship goal of $8,000.00. Thank you for your help and support; we couldn’t do it without you!
