Notes

Here we will only report on the essentials.

  • GEDE Warming Up Phase
  • With GEDE we are still in the warming up phase which required explaining again what GEDE is about, how to synchronise with other initiatives, etc. This meeting indicated that the most of the engaged experts in GEDE are now aware of the goals and procedures and obviously share the views on GEDE. This also implies that it is now time to shift the focus on concrete issues. It seems also that the vacation period is over for most, i.e. it may be necessary to have separate chats with a few to get them to speed.
  • There was one questionin the intro section about the term “neutral platform”.
  • GEDE may not be driven by a specific solution or technology from the beginning. The process must be to first aggregate all relevant “assertions” about a specific thematic bundle, the try to converge on agreeable “assertions”. At the end of the process GEDE can refer to good practices and also implementations.
  • “Assertions” need to come from initiatives and not from individuals and there should be a reference to where it comes from.
  • In slightly different form this issue was raised already at the first meeting and is reported in the notes.
  • The meeting notes were mentioned and there was no further comment on them.
  • Procedure Document:
  • There was a question about the procedures to get the Bundle discussion started and we need to check the current version whether the procedure is clear enough.
  • The GEDE Group will define bundles for the discussions.
  • For each bundle a charrette (subgroup) will be built and some authors will be appointed who will start the work with a basic document.
  • For each bundle interested GEDE members will “nominate” experts to participate in the charrette.
  • A separate wiki page and separate email list will be used for each charrette to organise the work.
  • The charrettes should release update results regularly and submit it to the GEDE group and the RDA discussion which will be organised for the time being by the Data Fabric Group.
  • Terminology Issue
  • The character of GEDE as a forum to translate between communities is also important. We need to take time to build these bridges where necessary.
  • RDA Plenary Denver
  • GEDE and this whole issue of finding agreements on recommendations will be subject of the discussions at the RDA plenary in Denver.
  • There will be a Data Fabric session in the first Breakout on Thursday morning to which we invited all WG and IG chairs. We don’t know of course who will show up.
  • Rebecca will present GEDE.
  • Bratislava Meeting, 14-15th November
  • the preliminary agenda is as follows
  • Welcome
  • Getting to know each other
  • Intro for new persons
  • Finish basic documents
  • elect one/two co-chairs from the GEDE members
  • define 3 or 4 first bundles
  • discuss a first PID bundle document with guidelines
  • this may and will be changed dependent on the comments
  • With respect to the joint session with the e-IRG folks the following can be said:
  • The e-IRG workshops are open, i.e. other people than from e-IRG and GEDE can participate.
  • A Program Committee with people from eIRG, RDA and GEDE has been setup by the Slovakian hosts and will work out an agenda solution which will include sessions for talks and perhaps panels. Peter is in the PC and take care that GEDE will be informed timely to comment. The goal must be to exchange relevant messages from GEDE to e-Infrastructures.
  • GEDE members are free to send other people who also want to address wishes regarding services etc.

Action Points

  • All are requested to look at the basic documents and here in particular the charter and the procedures documents and comment.
  • Rebecca and Peter will set up the wiki channels considering the point made about efficiency of work.
  • The PID author group (Maggie, Michael, Dieter, Rob, Peter) has to finish the first PID Bundle Basic Document and send it to GEDE.
  • All are requested to think about bundles where the DFIG work can be used as one source of inspiration.
  • Rebecca and Peter will prepare the next Virtual Meetingand we suggest to hold it at 27.9 at 14.00

Issues of interest

  • PID workshop

A PID training course will be held 31 August – 2 September in Munich, more information is available here:

  • Peter will continue to prepare the f2f meeting in Bratislava where the setting will probably be as follows:
  • 14.11 GEDE Meeting starting at about 12.00 until 15.11 at about 12.00
  • 15.11 Joint GEDE - eIRG meeting starting at about 13.00 until 16.11 at about 12.00
  • we need to synch with ENVRI to not have a conflict situation
  • Reference to the Data Fabric IG for inspiration on bundles and to discuss how to synchronise activities:
  • RDA EU has a call open for adoption projects (
  • A group experts in RDA started now working on what is called PID Centric Data Management and Access ( and is actively looking for funding options in the US and EU and for interested communities to participate.
