technology support:
This is an online course that will rely on Canvas learning platform. It is your responsibility to become familiar with Canvas and seek support for any technical issues. If you are having technical issues with Canvas, click the Help icon in Canvas to contact the 24/7 support hotline. You will find additional Canvas support and technology requirements on the CWU online learning website (http://www.cwu.edu/online-learning/)
Canvas runs on Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, or any other device with a modern web browser. Canvas supports the last two versions of every browser release. We highly recommend updating to the newest version of whatever browser you are using as well as the most up-to-date Flash plug-in. This guide explains which version of each browser is currently supported in Canvas. There are also tips on how to configure your chosen web browser to work best with Canvas.
Canvas is not officially supported on mobile browsers, but it does offer an app for iOS and Android. However, because it is made to work on a desktop, this is not the best interactive experience. Since Canvas uses small elements of Flash, not all Canvas features may be supported on mobile devices, especially on iOS.

TECHNOLOGY Issues:
Technology glitches can, and are likely to, occur; do not wait until the last minute when doing assignments. NOTE: When it comes to taking your quizzes on Canvas, it is my policy to allow students only one attempt at each exam. If you get “kicked out” of the system, for whatever reasons, you will not be allowed back into the quiz.
CONTACTING THE INSTRUCTOR:
For immediate attention, the best way to contact me is via email (). I check my email multiple times a day, Mondays – Fridays, and will respond within 24 hours (or sooner) during the work week. You must check your CWU email numerous times a week for this course as I will frequently send announcements and updates to you via email. Additionally, office hours are Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:00-6:00 PM, or by appointment.
CHALLENGES TO grades:
There is a statute of limitations of one week after assignments are graded for challenges to assignment, quiz, and exam points. This means you have one week to raise any issues with your grade. If you do not check GRADES in Canvas and do not realize until several weeks after an assignment is due that you did not hand it in, or that you sent it to the wrong place, it will be too late to make any grade changes. If you keep up to date by checking your e-mail, ANNOUNCEMENTS, and GRADES, you should have no issues. I will normally grade assignments within one week after they are due.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
Students are required to read all chapters, articles, etc. as is assigned in the syllabus, as well as any supplemental material that is posted on Canvas.
· Lectures: I will make narrated recordings of “lectures” available to you under MODULES on Canvas as they come up in the syllabus. You will be required to view these lectures.
· DISCUSSION BOARD: Research and experience has shown that the quality of online learning is greatly enhanced when there is meaningful faculty-to-student and student-to-student interaction in a course. As such, you will be required to make and respond to postings on the discussion board throughout the quarter. Students will be required to make two posts each week of the course for a total of 18 posts. The first will be an original post on a topic assigned by me; this will be due by midnight on Friday of each week. The second will be a response post to another student in the course; this will be due by midnight on Sunday of each week. In the discussions, students are expected to incorporate the films, the texts, articles, their own personal viewpoints, and use APA style referencing in their writing.
· SUPPLEMENTARY COURSE MATERIALS: In addition to recorded lectures, as current events and supplementary materials arise, which are pertinent to our discussion, that material will also be posted under the MODULES tab in Canvas.
· QUIZZES: The quizzes will be available on Monday from 7:00 AM to midnight on Sunday. The quizzes will correspond directly to that week’s assigned reading and will be in a multiple-choice and/or true/false format. There will be a total of seven quizzes, one each week from Week ONE through Week SEVEN of the course.
· RESEARCH PAPER PROPOSAL: Students are to pick a topic of their choice to research. The topic must relate to the course (a situation, case, incident, etc. implicating and discussing the civil liability of a criminal justice professional) and must be approved by the instructor. Proposals are to be 2-3 pages in length. Proposals should be double-spaced with one-inch margins and typed in a 12 pt. font. Proposals are due, via Canvas, no later than by midnight on Sunday, April 10. I am happy to discuss possible topics with you prior to this due date.
· RESEARCH PAPER and PRESENTATION: The research paper, corresponding to the above mentioned proposal, should be 15-20 pages in length. Papers should be double-spaced with one-inch margins and typed in a 12 pt. font. They should be well-organized and written in complete sentences with proper grammar and spelling. Each student is required to consult with a Writing Center consultant as part of his or her grade for this paper. Papers must include a literature review, and be written in APA citation format. Papers are due, via Canvas, no later than by midnight on Sunday, May 29. Each student will be required to present the findings of their research paper to the rest of the class via the Discussion Board. This will be the Discussion Board assignment for Week TEN.
· COMPREHENSIVE ESSAY EXAM: during Week ELEVEN, students will be required to complete a take-home essay exam. This will be a cumulative exam.

ROLE OF INSTRUCTOR IN DISCUSSION:
I will be reviewing the discussion board daily and may add comments, occasionally. Just because I do not comment does not mean I am not reading your postings. This is not the case. I want you to explore the issues and discuss them amongst yourselves to enhance your analysis and discussion skills. I will be updating your points weekly in the Canvas GRADES. You should be checking it often.
GRADING OF DISCUSSION BOARDS:
The following criteria are evaluated in your original postings to the Discussion Board and your replies to the postings of others.
Original Posting (15 points): In addition to the specifics of the assignment, your post should adhere to the following guidelines:
1. Made in time for others to read and respond.
2. Mentions at least TWO specific points from the film, articles, PowerPoint lectures, or readings.
3. Relation of new information to old information learned in the course to date.
4. Relation of information in the film, article, or reading to personal experience.
5. Discussion at a critical level,* not just recitation of facts from the article, etc.
6. Length of postings: approximately ONE—single-spaced—word processing page (NOTE: Not short!).
7. Use proper grammar and citation.
8. Use APA style referencing.
9. Think of this as an actual assignment (paper quality) that you would be turning in to your instructor.
Reply to the Postings of Others (5 points):
1. Made in time for others to read and respond.
2. Discusses points you like/agree with, and/or points you dislike/disagree with, and why.
3. Length should be about a half-page—single-spaced—in length (approximately 100 words) and use proper grammar and citation if applicable.
*NOTE: Discussion at a critical level means critiquing a piece by analyzing the good and/or bad aspects of it, and justifying your analysis. You do this by discussing things such as:
§ Your opinion on the point mentioned.
§ Why you hold that opinion.
§ What you see wrong with the point mentioned.
§ How you see the point consistent/inconsistent with what you have learned so far.
§ Implications for the future.
§ Consistencies/inconsistencies within an article or reading itself.
§ Etc.
DO NOT simply tell me what the movie, book, article, reading, etc. states…I already know this!!!
Netiquette:
§ Check the discussion frequently and respond appropriately, and on subject.
§ Capitalize words only to highlight a point or for titles. Capitalizing otherwise is considered SHOUTING!
§ Be professional and careful with your online interactions, including with me!
§ Wait 24 hours before responding to something that angers you.
§ All postings should be free of language that would constitute harassment, discrimination, or be considered profane.

Students are on their honor to avoid “proscribed conduct” as defined by the “Student Judicial Code.” Violations of this section will result in a failing grade in the course in addition to further possible university sanctions.
