ADVERTISING IN HOLTON NEWS

A certain amount of advertising in the magazine is beneficial because if covers the cost of producing the magazine, and supports local businesses. However, there is a limited amount of space and we frequently receive requests for further advertising which we sadly cannot accommodate. We would like to support new and local businesses, and enable readers to access them, but our production process only allows for a certain number of pages! As a solution to this, it is planned to produce an advertising supplement, which will be inserted in the magazine for readers to keep, ready for that moment when you need a plumber, builder etc. Anyone wishing to be included can email the Editor or contact Carol Woodcock on 01472 599818 or , or Evelyn Wilson on 01472 823891 or .

XMAS FAYRE

This festive event will be coming up next month, a chance to come and browse the stalls, and maybe buy small gifts. Please consider whether you have any unwanted bottles to donate for the bottle stall, or whether you might have time to bake us a cake or some buns? All contributions will be much appreciated, we will gladly collect if that helps.

ENCOURAGEMENT

Dante Gabriel Rossetti, the famous nineteenth-century poet and artist, was once approached by an elderly man. The old fellow had some sketches and drawings that he wanted Rossetti to look at and tell him if they were any good, or at least indicated potential talent. Rossetti looked them over carefully. After looking at the first few, he knew that they were worthless.

6

They showed not the least sign of artistic talent. But Rossetti was a kind man, and he told the elderly man as gently as possible that the pictures were without much value and showed little talent. He was sorry, but he could not lie to the man.

The visitor was disappointed, but seemed to expect Rossetti’s judgement. He then apologised for taking up Rossetti’s time, but asked him if he would just look at a few more drawings, which had been painted by a young art student. Rossetti looked over the second batch of sketches and immediately became enthusiastic.

‘These,’ he said, ‘oh, these are good. This young student has great talent. He should be given every help and encouragement in his career as an artist. He has a great future if he will work hard and stick to it.’ Rossetti could see that the old fellow was deeply moved. ‘Who is this fine young artist?’ he asked. ‘Your son?,

‘No,’ said the old man sadly. ‘It is me – forty years ago. If only I had heard your praise then! For you see, I got discouraged and gave up – too soon.’

From Brian Cavanaugh’s The Sower’s Seeds.

A word of praise and encouragement can often be all it takes to transform a person’s life. Resolve today to say something when asked for your advice.

SENIOR PRAYER

Grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway, the good fortune to run into the ones I do and the eyesight to tell the difference, amen.
