Sustainable energy savings

Austrian Alpine Association relies on LED lighting in its lodges

Each year, the main hiking and mountaineering season in the Alps starts in early spring. Numerous lodges along the trails provide not only protection from darkness and weather, but also an opportunity for board and lodging. The Austrian Alpine Association alone has more than 200 mountain lodges with some 13,000 beds, which makes the association one of the largest lodging operations in Austria.

Reduction of CO2 emissions

As most of the mountain lodges are not connected to the electric supply mains energy production requires a lot of effort. Power from photovoltaics systems and plant oil generators is very expensive and available only to a limited extent. Regarding electricity from hydropower, a dry autumn or cold winter may result in a power shortage very quickly as well. Since LED lamps have many benefits due to their extremely high energy efficiency and sustainability, the Austrian Alpine Association advocates the replacement of conventional lamps with LED light sources. About half the mountain lodges operated by the Alpine Association have already been fitted with LED lamps by LEDON. A total of 2400 LED lamps allow an annual reduction in CO2 of more than 40 tonnes. “Within the scope of a special initiative, the Austrian Alpine Association has had some 100 mountain lodges fitted with mercury-free LED lamps and subsidised this replacement with about EUR 20,000. We were thus able to make an essential contribution to improving the eco-balance”, explains Vice-President Helmut Ohnmacht the successful initiative. With the support of LEDON, other organisations such as the German Alpine Association or the Swiss Alpine Club have already followed suit and replaced conventional lamps with LED light sources in some of their lodges.

Environmental compatibility and energy efficiency

The Lizumerhütte mountain lodge in Tyrol is a good example of the benefits resulting from the new lighting. It is also open in winter, and accommodates 145 persons in the dining area and 80 for sleeping. Since August 2012, Anton Nigg, the lodge’s tenant, has been using some 100 LED lamps in the entire building. The mountain lodge, which was awarded the eco-label of the Alpine Association, is operated and managed in an environmentally compatible and energy efficient manner. Mr. Nigg mainly appreciates the high savings potential of up to 85 percent resulting from the new lighting. “In some rooms of our lodge, the lighting is switched on for up to ten hours a day,” says Nigg. “Therefore the new LED lamps pay for themselves very quickly when compared to the previously used incandescent lamps.” Mr. Nigg is also impressed by the LED's high lighting quality. Mr Nigg's interim conclusion after more than six months of operation:“No difference to the original lighting atmosphere is visible. Combined with their long service life and protection against vibration, the new LED light sources are absolutely convincing.”
