Focus on the extracurricular activities you enjoy most. Get involved and maybe even try for a leadership position

Maintain good attendance and grades

Sign up to take the PSAT. The test date is October 17. This is a preliminary SAT test which can put you in the running for merit scholarships

Take the ASVAB test November 19-20. This provides great information for your interests, strengths, and weaknesses

Use the internet to gather information on post secondary options

Review your academic plan with your counselor - Keep post-high school entrance requirements in mind

Visit campuses of schools/colleges you may be interested in attending after high school

If you are planning to attend a 4-year college, take either the ACT or SAT (or both) in the spring. If you do not have a history of doing well on standardized tests, consider taking a SAT/ACT preparatory session - They are offered during after school tutoring

All Juniors will take the ACT at Lumberton High on March 5, 2013

Talk with coaches about college sports and scholarships eligibility

During the summer register for the fall SAT/ACT

Explore the website cfnc.org for information on your role in preparing for college

Attend information sessions and college nights sponsored by various schools

Consult with your child’s school counselor for college search ideas and advice

Review all options for financial aid (FASFA, college websites, scholarship opportunities)

Support your child as he or she prepares for and takes the ACT/SAT exams

Encourage and begin general visits to a variety of colleges/schools

Network with other parents for information and support

Summer Before Senior Year

Encourage your child to look at online applications and begin thinking about essay questions colleges post

Visit a wide variety of schools from small to medium to large, to public and private, review costs and location

Check to make sure your child will be taking a senior course load that will prepare him/her for success in post secondary education
