THE UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND
AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING 2007

Application details

Nominees must use the application template. Comprehensive details of application requirements are contained in the Guidelines for the Awards for Excellence in Teaching (approved by Academic Board 07.11.2005) on the Teaching and Learning web site under Teaching Excellence/Awards for Excellence in Teaching.

The application should be presented in 1.5 line spacing and an 11 point font such as Times New Roman or Arial is strongly recommended. The minimum acceptable font size is 10 point. Page limits will be strictly administered.

(a)Written Statement

A core element of an application for an Award for Excellence in Teaching is a written statement in which nominees describe their teaching activities and achievements, and specifically address the selection criteria relevant to their teaching experience.

The written statement should be presented under the following headings as appropriate, in that order and should not exceed 12 pages in total.

  • Overview
  • Approaches to teaching that influence, motivate and inspire students to learn
  • Development of curricula and resources that reflect a command of the field
Approaches to assessment and feedback that foster independent learning
  • Respect and support for the development of students as individuals (required)
Scholarly activities that have influenced and enhanced learning and teaching
  • Overview: The overview provides the opportunity for nominees to commence the written statement with a focus on the specific character of their teaching and achievements. It is recommended that the overview be approximately 2 - 3 pages in length and that it include:
  • the nominee’s educational philosophy and beliefs;
  • a description of the teaching context;
  • an integrated summary of the claims relating to the selection criteria;
  • teaching experience and responsibilities at all levels – undergraduate, postgraduate coursework, including continuing professional education and postgraduate research activities.
  • Elaboration of the relevant selection criteria:

As selection is based primarily on the written statement, the majority of the written statement should be devoted to addressing each of the five selection criteria in turn. Nominees must provide evidence in support of their claims against these criteria. Appendices may be included within the 12 page limit to support the claims however the relevance of any such material must be made clear in the written statement.

The selection criteria reflect areas where excellence in teaching can be demonstrated. Nominees are not expected to provide evidence of excellence in all areas, but should build the teaching profile that best highlights their achievements.

All nominees must address Criterion 4 Respect and concern for the development of students asindividuals.

(b)Curriculum Vitae

The curriculum vitae,or relevant extracts from Folios 1 and 2 in the Academic Portfolio, should outline the nominee’s educational qualifications, career history, teaching positions and teaching experience. The curriculum vitae/extractsare limited to 5 A4 pages for nominations from individuals. Teams may extend this limit, but with a limit of one page per team member.
