Garfield Center Summary:

The Garfield Center is unlike any other innovation center in the health care industry. Located in a converted warehouse, the Garfield Center has Hollywood style “movie sets” that are mocked up inpatient, outpatient and home environments. Our mission is to inspire the people of KP to envision the future of health care and empower them to create it.

Innovators begin the process with inspiration, then move into ideation and prototyping, and end the process with deployment and spread for impact. Innovation activities range from brainstorming the future of health and wellness to developing and testing technology prototypes, or evaluating constructability of new healthcare facility designs. With 10,000 visitors participating in 275 innovation activities each year, there is tremendous need to communicate internally what’s happening. A Garfield Center Strategic Internal Communication Plan was created in 2013.

Essential Functions:

The “Innovation Storyteller” is responsible for telling compelling stories which brings the Garfield Center Strategic Internal Communications plan to life. The communication plan objectives are to:

·  Update perceptions of GC to include coaching services, regional access, and innovation leadership

·  Inspire innovators to believe change is possible and act on new ideas

·  Clearly explain our services and how internal teams can work with us

·  Increase how many innovators we are reaching, particularly in regions outside California

·  Demonstrate value of innovation work done by Garfield Center and its partners

(1) Publicize Garfield Center project successes (including Device Operationalization, Innovation Advising Services, and major Garfield Center events) internally through existing corporate communications and regional communications channels:

·  Capture project stories in multiple formats (written, video vignettes, “tweets” on internal social media)

·  Create templates to simplify information gathering from project teams

·  Update Garfield Center website with project stories and key messages

·  Publish and monitor content on internal social media sites (KP IdeaBook and later Sharepoint2013)

·  Prove results by demonstrating how Garfield Center innovation activities save lives for KP and foster a culture of innovation (metrics, awards, ROI)

·  Show how innovation connects to KP priorities and helps the organization achieve its mission

(2)  Accelerate the rate at which internal innovators are aware of projects and resources in KP’s regions through aggressive internal communications and partnering with regions and operations.

·  Begin regular, outbound communication to engage existing innovation community and find new audiences in all regions

·  Create and maintain mailing lists

·  Disseminate key messages by audience

(3)  Improve the onsite experience for Garfield Center visitors. Increase energy levels onsite, allow for discovery, engage visitors and employees, and infuse the space with the artifacts and ideals of innovation.

·  Maintain digital signage content

·  Update wayfinding signage / map handout

(4)  Special projects

·  Lead tours

·  Ad hoc assignments include:

i.  Create an “Employee yearbook” (Board of who is onsite with photos, title/group, and favorite quote or answers to 3 questions.

ii. Create an inspiration bulletin board (“Staff picks” for books, stories, places, people; Things that inspire us towards wellness, creativity, and happiness)

iii.  Display innovation artifacts (ie visual notes) as art

Basic Qualifications:

·  Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism or related field or equivalent experience.

·  2 years minimum of experience in a corporate communications environment or equivalent experience

·  Strong verbal and written communication skills for Web, video and traditional media.

·  Ability to communicate in plain language and infuse a playful tone into communications -- good storyteller

·  Comfortable with internal and external audiences – able to differentiate content appropriate for each

·  Great planning and organizational skills

·  Interest and experience with social media

·  Interest in photography

·  Ability to shoot and edit iPhone videos

·  Ability to get things done through influence and collaboration.

·  Ability to work effectively with a team

·  Comfort in new role that has not previously existed, creating processes and prototyping/adjusting in real time.

·  Creativity, curiosity and desire to learn.

·  Interest in improving public speaking skills

·  Microsoft Office (Word, Powerpoint, some Excel)

·  Sense of humor a must

Preferred Qualifications:

§  Good eye for visual design

§  Video editing skills (e.g. Adobe Premiere, iMovie, etc.)

§  Graphic & Interaction Design skills - Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, In Design, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Flash)

§  Interest in drawing/sketching
