EXCEPTIONAL LEAVE OF ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL (ELAS)

Leave of absence during term-time is not a right. Our absence policy is based on The Education (Pupil Registration) (England) Regulations 2006 as amended by The Education (Pupil Registration) (England) (Amendment) Regulations 2013.

The 2013 amendment to this legislation has removed the paragraphs making any reference to the Headteacher being able to grant leave of absence for a pupil to go away on holiday. Under the new legislation:

  1. Parents have no right to remove their children from school for the purpose of a holiday
  2. Parents may request permission for an absence in exceptional circumstances.

Taking an unauthorised holiday could cost you up to £100 per parent per child in fixed-penalty notices or a court appearance if you fail to pay.

If you take your child out of school for a holiday without even seeking permission, you can expect to be issued with the relevant number of fixed-penalty notices

Please note that all requests are considered on their merits, taking into account the impact on the child’s learning and other factors, including his or her current attendance record. The Head Teacher will only agree to authorise your child’s absence in exceptional circumstances. Make sure you explain clearly why you are requesting leave for your child.

If in doubt, talk to the Head Teacher or the School Office.

If your child is unwell and you keep them at home, you must phone or email the school office to inform them before 9am in the morning and thereafter every day until they return to school. You must then send a note on their return again giving the reason for their absence.

All absences including appointments or early finishes must be officially requested.

Permission must be requested from the Head teacher for any child’s absence at least 2 weeks in advance (unless in an emergency).

All requests will be considered but permission may not always be granted.

Year 6 pupils should not take any extra time off especially before SATs week (in May).
