St Benedict (480- 543 AD). Declared one of the Patrons of Europe by St Pope John Paul II, his Rule for monks became the most popular to be followed in the western world. Before the time of Henry VIII there were 132 Benedictine abbeys in England alone. Many of our cities (such as York, Canterbury and Gloucester) owe their prominence to the fact that monasteries were founded there. Today the abbeys at Ampleforth and Downside –among others - represent that great tradition of spirituality.

St Augustine Zhao Rong & his Companions. These are martyrs of China canonised in 2000 by St Pope John Paul II. Augustine was a soldier who later converted and was ordained a priest. He is among around 120 Catholics put to death in China between 1640 and 1938 and representing many thousands of Christians executed there in times of persecution and national upheaval.

EVENSONG this Sunday 6th July, at 4.00pm in St Thomas's church - all are welcome!
