A RESOLUTION adjourning the House of Representatives in honor of the Reverend Claude M. Witt.

WHEREAS, it seems appropriate from time to time for this honorable body to reflect upon the contributions of special Kentuckians who have enriched the lives of so many people; and

WHEREAS, Claude M. Witt was born on November 25, 1932, and he is a native of Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky; he is the devoted husband of Marcella Witt, whom he married on April 26, 1963; and he is the loving father of two daughters, Linda Witt, of Jefferson County, and Jennifer Lambert, of Pike County; and two sons, Jeffrey Witt, of Warren County, and Richard Witt, of Jefferson County; and he is the proud grandfather of three grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, Claude M. Witt attended the University of Louisville, the University of Wisconsin, and Boyce Bible School; and

WHEREAS, Claude M. Witt is an esteemed member of the Jefferson County community where he is a devout member of the Farmdale Baptist Church; he has served as executive director of the Temperance League of Kentucky since 1987. The Temperance League of Kentucky originated as the Anti-Saloon League of Kentucky on May 13, 1914. The name was changed to the Temperance League in 1951, and the organization began out of the conviction that alcohol as a beverage is a damaging drug. From its inception, the purpose of this organization has been to provide a spiritual ministry by extending the work of the church in concern for the total welfare of mankind, and by Christian action on moral issues, with special emphasis on correcting the use of alcohol as a beverage; and

WHEREAS, Claude M. Witt also served as director of Wisconsin's Temperance Organization from 1976-1983 where he was on the state's Governor's Commission of Alcohol Abuse; he was president of the American Council on Alcohol Problems from 1997-1998; he was chaplin of the Louisville Police Department from 1995-1997; he was a member of the executive board of the Southern Baptist Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission; and he serves on the Kentucky Attorney General's Task Force Subcommittee of Enforcement;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The House of Representatives does hereby praise and honor the Reverend Claude M. Witt for his many contributions to the people of his community which are beyond measure and will have lasting impact, and for the distinction he has brought to the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Section 2. When the House of Representatives adjourns this day, it does so in honor of the Reverend Claude M. Witt.

Section 3. The Clerk of the House of Representatives is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the Reverend Claude M. Witt, Executive Director, Temperance League of Kentucky, 2722 Crittenden Drive, Louisville, Kentucky 40209.
