MARCH 12, 2017 SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT

WEDNESDAY EVENING LENTEN SERIES SPEAKER THIS WEEK:

TRISH WYSOCKI- “HOPE FOR OUR CHILDREN”

Join us at 7:00PM in the church on Wednesday March 15

FROM FR. DAN’S DESK…

Last weekend I enjoyed seeing so many of our High School Students at the Pops Concert at the High School on Friday and Saturday nights. We have a lot of talented Youth in both singing ability and instrumental ability. And we are blessed to have a wonderful music program at the High School under the direction of Mr. David Kennedy – brother of Sheila Conroy our Religious Ed Coordinator for our Elementary Program. Congratulation to all our Youth who participated – it was a fun evening!

The 2017 Taste of OLBS is now history, but it proved to be a fun and delectable time at the Parish Center! Thanks to all those who prepared a soup, appetizer, side, entrée or dessert! Once again the coveted “Measuring Cup Trophy” has eluded my grasp – but there is always next year! Hope fully I will not be like Susan Lucci who was nominated so manty times for a Daytime Emmy and never won! Congratulations to Chuck Laudato who won First Place for his Seafood Chowder! I tried it and it was delicious! Congrats to Third Place Winner - Trish Ragone and her “Cheeseburger Soup”! And I guess Second Place isn’t so bad for my Golumbki! Next year we will have some new guidelines – we will not do “take out” for the first hour to assure that some of the food lasts a reasonable time for everyone to get some (my 130 Golumbki were gone in 19 minutes!). We will also have a top prize in all three food categories – Soup or Appetizer, Entrée, and Dessert. It was a fun time and we look forward to next year’s Taste!

I’m happy to congratulate our parishioner – Anne Fratini – for receiving the “Grinspoon Excellence in Teaching Award” for her first year in teaching! Anne teaches 6th Grade at North Middle School. Anne is the daughter of our Secretary – Sue Fratini and Peter Fratini. Congratulations Anne – well deserved! Anne has taught CCD for us, assisted with our Vacation Bible Camp each Summer, and was on our Children’s Liturgy of the Word Team. I’d like to think she got some great experience teaching right here in our parish!

I know some of you have mentioned to me that you miss our Saturday Chaplet of Divine Mercy in the Chapel prior to the 4:00PM Mass. You have asked me why it stopped and I have to say I’m not sure. We began doing it during the Holy Year of Mercy, but certainly it didn’t have to stop when the year was over in November. I do know it was well attended and worked well right before the 4:00PM Mass. I will look into it and see if we can’t ask those who were leading the Chaplet, if they might consider doing it again! Stay tuned!

Our Facilities Manager - Bob Stack will be retiring from his job at the end of this month. I want to thank Bob for his 4 years of service to our parish. He worked tirelessly for the good of the parish and we are grateful! Our parishioner - Kevin Richardson will be replacing Bob. Kevin is a very capable carpenter who has done construction and home renovations, and most recently rebuilt the walls near the Altar to accommodate our new Large Screen TV’s. Kevin does wonderful work, is dedicated and dependable, and is a great guy to work with. I hope he will enjoy his new role as our Facilities Manager. Congratulation Bob and Kevin!

Just a reminder that during Lent we have weekly Stations of the Cross on Fridays at 7:00PM in the church; we have a Tuesday Evening Mass at 5:30 in the Chapel (no Tuesday Morning Mass); we have extra hours for Confessions on Tuesday evenings from 6:00-7:30PM; and we have our Wednesday Evening Lenten Speaker Series every Wednesday of Lent at 7:00PM in the church. Please see the Speaker Series Flyers near the bulletins and consider inviting someone to our church for the Series!

Our Diocesan Annual Catholic Appeal is now well underway. I hope you will all participate in the Appeal this year by returning the Appeal Card you received in the mail or take one from the tables near the bulletins. Please note that you can designate a particular ministry, charity or organization for your gift to the Appeal. Please note the name of the ministry, organization or charity from those listed, and write it on your pledge card. This year a special effort is being made to encourage those who may not have ever given to the Appeal in the past, to do so this year. Even a small donation adds up when multiplied, so please consider your gift to the Appeal today! Thank you for your support of the agencies, ministries and organizations which receive funding from the Appeal, offering valuable services in the four counties of Western Mass!

God Bless, Fr. Dan

PARISH WOMEN’S RETREAT

We are scheduling the Annual Parish Women's Retreat, at Our Lady of Calvary in Farmington, CT. This will be our 5th year going there! It is a wonderful opportunity to take a break; to set aside a short amount of time for yourself. How does it work? We carpool and leave on a Friday afternoon about 5pm, and arrive home about 2 on Sunday afternoon. This is a small facility - a large, charming house style; generally between 30 and 45 women are in attendance for the weekend. The time there consists of hearing short talks, morning service on Saturday and Mass on Sunday, opportunities for free time to read, reflect, nap, etc. And of course the meals are provided. Rooms are private. The cost is $250, but they are willing to make allowances for any woman who finds that is a hardship and requests assistance. The deposit to register is $50. The weekend that we are looking at is March 31 - Apr 2. Register online at ourladyofcalvary.net, or print out the mail-in registration form and send it to them directly. You are also welcome to invite your family members on this retreat; they do not need to be members of our parish to join us. For more information, call the parish office.

ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL

“One Family, Many Gifts”, this year’s theme for the Annual Catholic Appeal, calls on each of us to unite in one mission to share God’s blessings. For 58 years, the Annual Catholic Appeal has provided financial support to agencies throughout the four counties of western Massachusetts. This year, we ask that you prayerfully consider your financial gift to the Appeal. For every dollar raised, we return approximately 93% to the community. While sheltering the homeless, promoting life at all stages, giving food to the hungry and comforting the bereaved, we can stand together in love and mercy. Thank you for your past support and we look forward to you continued support. You can also learn more about the ministries that we help on our Facebook page Annual Catholic Appeal Springfield, MA. If you did not receive an invitation in the mail to participate in this year’s Annual Catholic Appeal, please contact the parish office or call 413-452-0637. Online donations may also be made at diospringfield.org/aca.
