POSITION TITLE:Crisis Intervention Worker

Reporting to: Crisis Intervention Worker Supervisor/Executive Director

POSITION DESCRIPTION SUMMARY:

Reporting directly to the Crisis Intervention Worker Supervisor and then the Executive Director, the incumbent is required to develop a supportive relationship with adult and child residents of the shelter, selectively and systematically applying helping skills within a crisis intervention and domestic violence framework. Additionally, the incumbent facilitates emotional support, referrals, and crisis intervention confidentially and non-judgementally.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Degree/diploma in Human Services, augmented by experience in the areas of family violence, crisis intervention, group facilitation, and community development.
  • Demonstrated decision-making, problem solving, interviewing and assessment skills, written and oral communication skills, self-motivation, and the ability to work independently.

POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:

I. Program Service Delivery

  • Develop supportive relationships by applying helping skills within a crisis intervention, trauma informed, and domestic violence framework.
  • Confidential, empathetic, and non-judgemental services are provided to educate residents of their alternatives and support the resident’s choices and respect their individual needs.
  • Answering the 24-hour Crisis Line. Screen and assess telephone callers’ needs by referring those callers whose needs are outside the service mandate or accepting for services and further assessment.
  • Promptly and accurately document information pertaining to crisis calls on the appropriate forms and phone logs.
  • Assess, upon intake, the immediate physical, emotional, and medical needs of the residents and their children, and when necessary to make appropriate referrals.
  • Begin to develop a service plan with the resident by:
  • Orienting the resident to guidelines and procedures.
  • Obtaining pertinent information regarding the resident’s present situation, expectations, and preliminary plan.
  • Explaining agency and staff/volunteer roles and services provided.
  • Completing information and intake forms.
  • Documenting and recording, in appropriate logs, resident information.
  • Provide on-going support and goal-directed contact by:
  • Assessing the resources, support and emotional needs, and utilize this information to assist with formulating goals and service plans.
  • Making and facilitating appropriate referrals to community agencies to meet the resident’s social, health, emotional, spiritual and economic needs.
  • Advocating on behalf of residents in their development of linkages to community resources and development of natural supports.
  • Providing parent/guardian information, as requested, and role modeling a positive parent-child interaction.
  • Providing information and support regarding the effects of violence on women and children.
  • Clearly and concisely document factual observations regarding behaviours, emotional presentation, and significant events via log/case notes.
  • Respecting the needs and choices of the resident.
  • Upon closing the resident’s file, effectively bring closure to the relationship by:
  • Evaluate immediate need, e.g. transportation, lodging, food, and ensure that the necessary resources are in place.
  • Assisting with formulating long term plans and goals, linking these with appropriate and necessary resources as directed by the resident.
  • Making appropriate referrals to community programs.
  • Completing required file closure documentation.
  • Facilitate psycho-educational information sessions as a means of intervention and education.
  • Providing supported referrals to other Safe Haven programs (Outreach) as necessary.
  • CIW’s will provide on call assistance to CIW staff on duty, on a rotating basis.

II. Household Responsibilities

  • Assisting and participating in on-going household maintenance activities by:
  • Assisting with meal preparation and clean up duties.
  • Notifying Maintenance Manager and/or CIW Supervisor of any repairs or damage.
  • Maintaining standards related to fire, health, safety, and security.
  • Completing additional household shift responsibilities.

III. Internal Relations and Staff Development

  • Participate as an effective team member with staff members, volunteers, and board members by participating in scheduled supervision and team meetings, remaining up-to-date with current knowledge and skills in pertinent areas, and completing assigned projects on time.
  • Executing duties in a professional manner and within the mission and vision of the organization.

IV. External Relations

  • Network with community resources to maintain positive inter-agency relationships while gaining understanding of their service mandates and promoting Safe Haven services.
