Orientation Date:December13,2017 (9am - 4pm)
*All CIs are provided with ongoing support in their clinical teaching role in addition to the preparatory CI Orientation day. The Clinical Coordinator for the course is a Faculty member who provides this ongoing support through weekly emails sharing course content taught in class each week; suggested clinical teaching strategies to help transfer learning from the classroom to the clinical setting through application to nursing care; one to two site visits to meet 1:1 with the CI; coaching with midterm verbal and final written clinical evaluations of students; direct phone and email access to Clinical Coordinator as questions or issues arise.

There are 3, 7 week clinical rotations in this course. Potential CIs may apply for 1, 2 or all 3 of the rotations.

Description:
The LawrenceS. Bloomberg Facultyof NursingProgramprovidesa full-time, two-year,second entry baccalaureatenursingeducation. Given thatnursing isa practice based profession, we believethat clinical experienceisavitaland integralcomponent ofthecurriculum, providingstudents withhands-on opportunitiestopracticetheir nursingskills undersupervision.Through teaching,role-modelingand supervision,theclinical instructorroleis anessentialand powerful componentofnursing education.
DutiesandResponsibilities:
1. Prepare patientassignmentsprior to students' arrivalon the nursingunit,reflectiveofthe students' levelofexpertise.
2. Assist withand assessthestudents'preparation for theirclinical activitieswith attentionto
integrationof nursing, pathophysiological,pharmacologic andtherapeuticconcepts.
3. Encouragean inquiring,theoryandevidencebased approach tonursing practice.
4. Facilitateinterprofessional communicationamong studentsand allmembersof thehealth care team.
5. Superviseandmonitorstudentprogressandsafetywhen performingtherapeuticpracticeskills suchasmedicationadministration,woundcareand IVadministration.
6. Collaboratewith nursing staff in gainingassistanceand accesstolearningexperiencesforthe
students.
7. Fosterdiscussionand debateaboutclinicallearning amongstudentsduringpostconferences.
8. Providestudentswithongoingverbal feedbackabout progressandawrittenfinal online evaluation.
Qualifications:
1. Interestinclinicalteachingand workingwith novicenursingstudents.
2. Minimumof2-3yearsof currentandrelevantclinicalexperience(adultmedical/surgicalacute carenursing).
3. Currentregistration withtheCollegeof NursesofOntarioasaRegisteredNurseorRegistered
Nursein theExtended Class.
4. BScN required;MNwill beconsideredanasset.
5. Previous experienceinclinical instructingor asapreceptor isanasset.
