Lab Safety Rules

  1. I will conduct myself in an appropriate manner in the lab. I will not engage in shoving, running, throwing objects, or playing practical jokes.
  2. I will follow all written and verbal instructions. If I do not understand any instruction, I will ask for help.
  3. I will not eat food, chew gum, or drink in the lab. I will not taste test any chemicals.
  4. When I first enter the science room, I will not touch any materials until instructed to do so.
  5. I will know the locations and operation of safety features in the room. This includes the emergency exits, fire extinguisher, fire blanket, eye wash, and goggle cabinet. (see below)
  6. I will not leave my lab station unattended and/or disturb other groups unnecessarily.
  7. I will let my teacher know about any medical conditions (i.e.- contacts, allergies) that may pose a hazard.
  8. I will wear lab goggles and/or a lab apron during the experiment.
  9. I will wear appropriate clothing to the lab. Loose and baggy clothes, dangling jewelry are not permitted. I will tie back my hair if it is long.
  10. I will wash my hands with soap and water after working in the lab. I will not touch my face or rub my eyes until my hands are washed.
  11. I will report any accident or injury to the teacher immediately.
  12. I will not remove any material from the lab, including live specimens.
  13. I will clean up my station to its original condition, and dispose of any waste according to my teacher. The sink will be free of all debris.
  14. I will report any cracked or broken glassware or slides.
  15. I will use both hands to transport lab equipment.
  16. I will handle living specimens with care and respect.

Safety Features in Room 216:

  1. Fire extinguishers are located beside the classroom door and directly across the hall.
  2. Fire exit is down the stairs beside classroom door and directly outside to driveway.
  3. Fire blanket is located in the front cabinet under the TV.
  4. Eye wash stations are located on the front table and side lab table.
  5. Goggle cabinet is above the main wash sink.
  6. Emergency shut off values are below the TV.
  7. Fume vent switches are located below the TV.
  8. Paper towel holders are located in the front and back of the classroom.
