What is Optional Practical Training?
Optional Practical Training (OPT) is a type of temporary work authorization granted to an eligible international student in order to gain practical experience in his/her field of study for up to 12months. The IAO requires the following sections to be completed by the student (Part A) and the international student’s academic advisor (Part B) in order for the student to submit an application for OPT.

The IAO is responsible for maintaining your record in SEVIS while you are on OPT. Please provide the Office with as much contact information as possible during your time on OPT. Please keep the Office informed of any changes in your name, address, email address, phone number while on OPT or if you terminate your OPT or if you have changed to another visa status WITHIN 10 DAYS OF ANY CHANGE.
