Identified high risk machinery is not operated by students under any circumstances
Disciplinary procedures for pupils who fail to follow safety rules
No pupils allowed in the workshop without supervision. Workshops locked at all times when staff not present
No practical activities are carried out by supply or cover staff
Classes with practical activities will not exceed 20 for one qualified teacher within workshop or food technology areas …[BS4163 states this as the maximum number. Where this number is exceeded, state agreed maximum numbers for the department and describe the compensating features agreed to account for the larger student numbers]…

Gas appliances inspected annually by a Gas Safe registered engineer
Gas pipe work is subject to an annual gas tightness test
…[EITHER Adopt the following for new installations]…Ventilation systems provided to ensure sufficient air to facilitate safe combustion and to limit build-up of CO2 and CO exhaust gases.
This ventilation is linked to an interlock which will cut off the gas supply if the ventilation is not operational and exhaust gases rise to an unacceptable level
…[OR for existing installations without a ventilation interlock]… A CO2 monitor is installed that sounds an audible alarm at 2800ppm and shuts off the gas at 5000ppm. A safe system of work is in place for arrangements if the 2800ppm alarm sounds. Staff have been briefed accordingly. In the event of the system being shut down at the 5000ppm limit, a gas proving device must be in operation OR the system must be re-energised by a Gas Safe engineer…[state which]…
...[EITHER]… all gas appliances have a flame failure device (FFD) …[OR]…a gas proving system is installed.
