Small Steps Boreham Sun Policy

Statement of intent:

Small Steps believes that the health and safety of children is of paramount importance. We understand the importance of making our setting a safe and healthy place for children, parents, staff and volunteers.

Aim:

We aim to make children, parents, staff and volunteers aware of health and safety issues when playing outdoors in the sun and to minimise the hazards and risks to enable the children to thrive in a healthy and safe environment.

Methods:

In order to achieve this aim we have drawn up a policy for playing outside when it is sunny:

  • Activities that can make use of the shaded area will be provided.
  • Parents/carers are asked to ensure that they have applied sun cream to their child before the child enters the setting.
  • Children must wear sun hats whilst playing in an outdoor area, if the child has not brought one of their own a sun hat will be provided by the setting.
  • Children are encouraged to wear tops that cover their shoulders and UV protective sunglasses are allowed to be worn as long as they are deemed safe by the staff.
  • Parents/carers are reminded about suitable footwear, no open toed sandals or flip flops are permitted to avoid accidents whilst at the setting.
  • Children are reminded regularly about accessing water which is available at all times. Staff ensure that that the water jug remained full at all times.
  • The children are made aware of the importance of playing safely in the sun in an appropriate manner which relates to their level of understanding.
  • Parents are reminded in the newsletters when appropriate about sun hats and sun cream.
  • Staff are encouraged to act as good role models by practicing sun safety.
  • The setting will regularly review and evaluate this policy and implement any changes that are necessary.
  • Staff will re-apply suncream to children at lunchtime on full days. The suncream to be used will be Boots ‘Soltan Kids 50+’ if you wish a different cream to be used this must be provided in a clearly labelled bottle.
