Program Philosophy 5 To be able to define Domestic Violence. Explain the types and the cycle of violence. Describe the power & control issues and the lethality related to Domestic Violence.

Culture & Domestic 5 Describe the culture Violence diversity, prejudices, & biases related to Domestic Violence. Explain how special populations & unique issues are affected by domestic violence. Substance Abuse & 5 Summarize how Domestic Violence substance abuse is directly related to Domestic Violence. Explain Rape Trauma Syndrome & counseling a rape victim. Define confidentiality & the Code of Ethics for Domestic Violence professionals. Be able to identify abusive relationships & develop safety planning.

Crisis Intervention 5 List guidelines for working with women,

men, & children in crisis, coping skills for crisis situations, manning the hotline, and assessing for suicide, homelessness & other crisis needs.

Illinois Domestic Violence Act 5 List the major components of the Illinois Domestic Violence Act,

Be able to explain orders of protection, describe law enforcement’s responsibility, list other civil statues & court rulings related to Domestic Violence and describe the rights of crime victims & The Witness Act.

Criminal Charges 5 Define Domestic Battery, describe how to work with the state’s attorney’s office, describe the role of an advocate, & explain batterers treatment & how group dynamics, success rates & accepting responsibility all correlate.

Effects of Domestic 5 Describe some of the Violence on children effects Domestic Violence has on children, explain how services benefit children, distinguish between emotional, physical & sexual abuse & explain the Child Abuse Reporting Act.

Course Outcomes: At the successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

·  Students will study the dynamics of domestic violence focusing on program philosophy, cultural diversity, relationship of substance abuse, crisis intervention, criminal aspects, battering treatment and how domestic violence affects adults, children, and our society as well as understanding the Illinois Domestic Violence Act.
