The Geelong Healthy Catering Guide has been developed by Healthy Together Geelong (HTG) to assist workplaces, associations and groups to make healthier choices when organising catering.

Assessment of all menu items in this guide has been conducted by HTG using the Healthy Choices guidelines. These guidelines use a ‘traffic light’ rating system and only menu items with a Green or Amber rating have been included in this handbook.

Achievement Program

The Healthy Together Achievement Program provides a framework and supportive resources to workplaces, schools and early childhood services throughout Victoria. This framework aims to promote health and wellbeing by encouraging and supporting healthy behaviours.

We recommend that workplaces refer to this Healthy Catering Guide and include it in the organisation’s health and wellbeing policy. This will help ensure healthy food options are always made available in meetings and events within the workplace. Healthy catering is not only good practice; it is also a component of the Healthy Workplace Achievement Program benchmarks.

To order healthy options from this guide please contact the caterer directly. Contact details for each caterer can be found at the top of their menu.

GREEN = Green category AMBER = Amber category

(V) = Vegetarian (GF) = Gluten free p/p = per person

S = Small L = Large

Please inform your caterer of any special dietary requirements. Most caterers are able to provide vegetarian and gluten free options.

The Healthy Choice Guidelines

The Healthy Choice guidelines classify food and drink into three categories according to their nutritional value.

Green

Green category foods and drinks are the healthiest choices. They are good sources of important nutrients and lower in fat, added sugar and salt. Examples include: breads and cereals, fruit and vegetables, reduced-fat dairy products, lean meat and poultry, fish, eggs, nuts and seeds.

Amber

Amber category foods and drinks should be selected carefully and consumed in moderation. Although amber items may provide some valuable nutrients they can contribute moderate amounts of fat, added sugar or salt. Examples include: regular fat milk, yoghurt and cheese, dried fruit, fruit juice and artificially sweetened drinks.

Red

Red category foods are low in nutrients and are high in sugar, fat or salt, and should be eaten rarely and in very small serves. Avoid red category choices in catering. Examples include: Deep fried foods, lollies, chocolates, cakes, chips, pastries and soft drinks.
Catering Tips

ü Always provide plain water as an option to drink

ü Include as many green category options as possible when ordering catering

ü Offer reduced-fat milk and soy milk (correctly labelled)

with tea and coffee

ü Offer herbal tea and decaf coffee as alternative options

ü Fruit and vegetables should be included in most of the menu items

ü Processed meats should be kept to a minimum

ü Serve spreads and condiments separately and use salt reduced condiments

ü Use multigrain, wholemeal, rye or other high fibre breads

ü Reduced-fat products should be used in preference to full fat products

ü Remember to order for special diets i.e. gluten free, vegetarian

ü Avoid over-catering

ü Reduce serving sizes; ask for mini muffins, provide pre cut serves, provide half serves

ü Offer alternative sweeteners
