Biographical Note:

Two genealogical charts in this collection were prepared by Julia Helen Davis Smith, granddaughter of Elizabeth and Israel Davis, on October 31, 1972. These charts provide the following information about Noah Davis. He was born about 1791 and served in the War of 1812. He and Margaret Miller had eight children, two of whom were twins. Six of their sons were in the Civil War. Noah moved to the vicinity of Union City, Indiana, in 1830, and to White County, Indiana, in 1842, where he was living in 1850 when the federal census was taken. He died at age 83, and Margaret died at age 73.

The second chart gives the family of Joshua and Sarah Lindsey, whose daughter Elizabeth (1831-1893) married Israel Stephens Davis (1826-1875) on March 8, 1849. This Israel was the second son of Noah and Margaret Davis. Joshua and Sarah had eight children. Joshua had a brother John and sister Nancy.

Scope and Content:

All the items in the collection are Xeroxed copies. There are typed and handwritten copies of family letters dating from 1851 through 1893, in addition to letters without a year. Reprints of articles have the following titles: “Standard and Reliable Medicines,” “Woman Know Thyself,” Temperance Camp Meeting, “The Erie Vigilance Society,” and “The Climax Washer, the Greatest of American Washing Machine.” There are also Xeroxed pictures of family reunions and a G.A.R. convention.

On March 25, 1863, brothers O. (Owen) C. Davis and F. (Francis) M. Davis wrote to their brother Israel Stephens Davis: “Brother Noah [twin of Owen] has got the Canses [Kansas] fever he wants to sell out to me but I can’t buy him out unless he will wait a few days on me. I have six months do me besides all of my extra pay.”

There are marginal notes on some of the typed letters, which appears to be in the handwriting of Julia Helen Davis Smith.
