Era I: Human Origins and Early Civilizations, Prehistory to 1000 b.c. (b.c.e.)
By the end of this unit, students will demonstrate knowledge of early development of humankind from the Paleolithic Era to the agricultural revolution by:
1. Explaining the impact of geographic environment on hunter-gatherer societies.
2. Listing characteristics of hunter-gatherer societies, including their use of tools and fire.
3. Describing technological and social advancements that gave rise to stable communities.
4. Explaining how archaeological discoveries are changing present-day knowledge of early peoples.

Objectives:
We will be able to describe the first settlements and the key characteristics of early civilizations.
Closing Task:
What do you think is the MOST IMPORTANT characteristic for a successful civilization? Explain.
Part I – Bell Ringer and Reading Quiz (11 minutes) Individual
As always, we will begin with the Bell Ringer. Remember, keep everything put away EXCEPT for a pencil and the paper you picked up on the way in. After you complete the Bell Ringer (write you name, date, block) you will complete your Reading Quiz on Chapter 1.3. This quiz in closed note, so make sure all of your materials are closed in your backpack.
Part II – Summative Quiz: 1st Day PowerPoint and Course Overview (20 minutes) Individual
Take this quiz on the information that was covered on the first day of class and in the Course Overview. If you have any questions during the exam, please raise your hand and I will come to you for assistance.
Part III – SPICE Themes Simplified (10 minutes (Whole Class)
Pay attention as we discuss the SPICE themes that we will be referring to throughout the year. Ask any questions you may have as we discuss each theme.
Part IV – Lecture and Movie Clips: Early Man and the Development of Agriculture (40 minutes) Whole Class
Pay attention and take notes as we discuss early man and the Neolithic Revolution. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.

The following assessment will occur on September 19:
1. Study for YOUR FIRST EXAM on Geography and Early Man (this will cover all of the information we have discussed in class and that you have read in your textbook and other assigned readings).
