MINUTES
Item/Comments Discussion/Outcome
1. / Approval of Minutes from
September 9, 2010 / The minutes from September 9, 2010 were approved with minor revisions.
2. / Rationale for Committee Membership / The Curriculum and Instruction committee questioned the large membership of the Basic Skills Coordinating Committee. They have asked that a rationale be written to support the large membership. Glenda handed out thedraft of a written rationale that she and Terri worked on. Following are some points that Glenda and Terri will work to incorporate into the rationale before it is presented to C&I:
- The committee functions well.
- There is good attendance.
- Each member is a key stakeholder in the Basic Skills Initiative.
- The large membership prevents the committee from relegating to silos.
3. / 3-Year Plan / In Terri Long’s absence Dr. Burley spoke about the 3-Year Plan for Basic Skills. At the end of 2009/10 there was a large rollover of funds. At that time due to the broad explanation from the Chancellor’s office on what qualified for funding some of the basic skills funds were designated to fund ongoing permanent positions. Since then the criteria for funding has become more specific. Although the positions are very much needed and beneficial to the students they do not exclusively serve our basic skills students. It will be recommended to the District that the college permanently fund some of these positions. This will increase the basic skills allotment for 2011-12 by approximately $500,000.
4. / Data Collection Goal Discussion / Some suggestions for data collection include:
- Collect historical data on retention.
- Follow a basic skills student’s progression from one course level to the next within a sequence and timeline (2-3 years).
- What percent of basic skills students have received no intervention from the basic skills projects? Compare their progression to those basic skills students who have received intervention.
- What are the common threads of students who do not take advantage of basic skills projects?
- Create focus groups – they contribute valuable incidental comments.
- Identify the basic skills projects that are able to capture the student data that is needed for the desired outcome.
5. / Upcoming Events/Reports

- Links 2 October 29th

- The goal of FIER is to provide networking and staff development opportunities for the Basic SkillsInitiative throughout the Inland Empire region and to network with other BSI projects across the state. On Sept. 17th Glenda, Terri, Bailey and Dan attended a FIER workshop at ChaffeyCollege. The main focus was on Chaffey’sStudent Success Centers which house tutor centers, learning activity labs, and project labs. 100 courses were rewritten to include a mandatory lab for most of the classes.
- On October 29th Valley College will host the next Links 2 workshop. The theme of the workshop islooking at data on student success and progression through the use of tools such as the logic model. On December 3rd, Mt. Sac will host aFIER regional meeting. It will be held at Founders Hall from 10a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Suggestions were made about which basic skills projects to highlight. A few mentioned were the WIN program, ASPIRE, Learning Communities, and the Teaching and Learning Center. WIN would be a great project to highlight as Madelyn will be presenting WIN at the 2010 Strengthening Student Success Conference.
- The theme this year for TLC is “Different Forms of Assessment”. The first workshop will be held on Oct. 15 and will feature a presentation on ePortfolios. A second TLC workshop will be held in the spring and will feature a presentation on “Developing Rubrics”.
