DM Definition and History
Massage is an Art and Science. Deep Massage is specific modality– and also a general name for learning to work more deeply and effectively with the whole person (regardless of modality)
TELL YOUR OWN STORY OF HOW RECEIVING AND/OR GIVING DEEP MASSAGE HAS BEEN PERSONALLY AND PROFESSIONALLY RELEVANT FOR YOU.
SHARE THE LIFE-CHANGING THINGS YOU’VE GOTTEN OUT OF RECEIVING ADVANCED BODYWORK.
Example – David’s story -
“Far as my experience goes - I started my practice in 1977 enthusiastically with Swedish within a year wanted more for my clients - I knew from Rolfing a lot more was deliverable.
Daniel Blake - Chicago 1982. He was a student of Ida Rolf. He taught how she worked (what she practiced) rather than what she preached (the 10 session recipe) because he felt that was a better way. So he showed us ways to improvise on the basis of the individual’s needs, rather than using a predetermined sequence of sessions.
He also was one of the earliest therapists in the world to come up a “postural” kinesiology. We learned how to analyze posture of the basis of which muscles were contracted and shortened or overly lengthened.
My curiosity led also to study of Cranio-sacral work – there I realized that more pressure did not necessarily mean deeper impact -- sometimes less is more.
Found that teaching and practicing I was wanting a clear explanation and way to look at both energy and structure - since I knew they weren’t separate.
How can you touch tissue effectively? - fascial and circulatory work
How can you touch the “person” - i.e. take their nervous system, emotions, mind, spirit optimally.
This led to teaching, more study, and ZB and then these coalesced into “Deep Massage”
Do – Touch experiments. On yourself and a partner. Handshake exercise
Without yet going into explaining it in detail – mention the fulcrum - the working tool of ZB and DM – important because it simultaneous engages the tissue and the person – e.g. structure and energy.
Zero Balancing - what David and the massage field in general learned from Dr. Fritz Smith. That you can touch structure and energy simultaneously. That energy flows through anatomical layers (it is not just some weird esoteric woo-woo stuff).
ZB applies this knowledge to the bones and joints.
Deep Massage to the muscles and connective tissue/fascia.
Deep Massage - (Umbrella term)
Overall Definition
Deep Massage, The Lauterstein Method - a unique soft tissue therapy which works consciously and simultaneously to enhance energy flow as well as structural integrity.
It is an “umbrella” term. So you consider it most broadly as covering a lot - trigger points/neuromuscular therapy; deep transverse friction/cross fiber, myofascial release, etc. – what many people call Deep Tissue (but what’s the difference?)
Difference is we are defining it by quality of contact (depth of contact and effect) - not just by quantity (depth of touch or pressure).
Deep Massage – important concepts
Thixotrophy, Tensegrity - structure
Nervous System = energy
How does touch acquire structural impact and personal meaning?
break
Discuss interface and what it means to touch at interface.
How does this translate into massage strokes? DM Principles – importance of the pause
How to naturally and optimally contact structure and energy --
Using Fulcrums
Show fulcrum graphically.
1. Centered and breathing
2. contact the body with pressure (take out the looseness)
3, add the beginning of a direction to take up the slack
4. Add additional vectors (movement or more pressure, movement, breath)
5. sustain a stroke sensitively through/within the tissue
6. simultaneously observe for working signs (or signs of discomfort)
7. clearly disengage
Explain goals – refine your touch skills.
Facilitate change, not just relief.
Affect more deeply than Swedish without necessarily more pressure.
Integrate your modalities – Swedish, Sports, Deep, in the way that meet the needs and desires of the client the best.
In internship and in your practice utilize deep work as called for.
Specialize if you like in Deep Massage and integrate other advanced modalities – like ZB, Structural and Clinical Bodywork, Shiatsu, Psychologically-oriented bodywork, etc. (ACT Program begins Nov. 7).
Touch Refinement – explore quality of touch
Briefly explain the “donkey” connection
The difference between really engaging the person and just going “deep”.
MAKE SURE EVERYONE REALLY GETS THIS.
Emphasizing sensing as well as moving.
When we touch, what are we feeling for?
Tension healthy tone
Hardness pliability
Hypertrophy good proportion
Adhesion/fibrosity freedom of movement
conscious holding letting go
What are we looking for?
Working Signs – cover today
Eyes
Breath
Facial expression
Swallowing
Kriyas
Borborisms
Voice vitality
Local change
Client reports
Cautions – Hair, Verbal fulcrums, Depletion, Transference
break
Demonstrate the DM Basic Protocol
Show ; then have them practice Half Moon Vectors through the neck and legs - in groups of 3 (or two if not enough time)
share/discussion
