CAREER SUMMARY
John Porter has served as a Senior level health executive with Avera Health and its predecessor organization, Presentation Health System, for more than 30 years. Mr. Porter’s roles within Avera Health have ranged from serving as Associate General Counsel to Executive Vice President to his current position of President/CEO which he assumed in 1989.
Avera is the health ministry of the Benedictine Sisters of Yankton, S. D., and the Presentation Sisters of Aberdeen, S.D. The system encompasses more than 300 locations in 103 communities in a five-state region. Avera’s owned and partnered facilities include 28 acute care facilities, 33 extended care facilities, 116 medical clinics and more than 121 other health-related treatment or service operations.People in the Avera service region are well-served by more than 13,100 Avera employees and physicians on staff at Avera hospitals and owned and managed facilities.

1989-Current President/CEO of Avera Health
The President/CEO of Avera Health serves as the system’s chief administrative officer, having offices in both Yankton and Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The President/CEO serves as a member of the Avera Health Board of Directors as well as serving as a board member of numerous subsidiary organizations.
1984-1989 Executive Vice President
As Executive Vice President Mr. Porter provided administrative liaison between the facility CEOs and the Avera Health Board of Directors as well as providing oversight of all operational activities.

1978-1989 Associate General Counsel
Mr. Porter served as the Associate General Counsel to Avera Health both prior to and during his tenure as Executive Vice President
1974-1978 Legal Counsel
Mr. Porter’s tenure with Avera Health started with his role as one of the staff attorneys for Avera Health commencing in 1974. In this role Mr. Porter also served as legal counsel for numerous state organizations including the South Dakota Hospital Association and the South Dakota Medical Record Association.
