QUEEN’S UNIVERSITY TRAINING PROGRAM IN ADULT HEMATOLOGY

HEMATOLOGY WARD ROTATION OBJECTIVES

OVERALL GOAL

To develop the skills necessary to function as the senior house staff member of an in-patient hematology service.

After completion of hematology ward blocks, the resident will be able to:

MEDICAL EXPERT

·  Diagnose and manage patients with adult acute leukemia

·  Manage patients admitted for high-dose chemotherapy and autologous stem cell rescue

·  Manage the in-patient chemotherapy of patients with aggressive or CNS lymphoma

·  Order chemotherapy for acute leukemia and lymphoma

·  Provide supportive care post leukemia chemotherapy and autologous transplant, including febrile neutropenia, mucositis, fluid and electrolyte balance

·  Perform bone marrow aspirate and biopsy, lumbar puncture and intrathecal chemotherapy

·  Underdate the care of patients with central venous catheters

COMMUNICATOR

·  Inform patients about their diagnosis, prognosis, current status and plans

·  Write effective chart notes and discharge summaries

·  Present medical information verbally to the attending and the medical team

·  Communicate effectively with the other health care team members

COLLABORATOR

·  Establish effective therapeutic relationships with patients and their families

·  Function effectively in the health care team

MANAGER

·  Demonstrate the leadership skills needed to run a hematology in-patient team

·  Understand the roles of the different members of the ward team

·  Delegate tasks appropriately to the medical team members

·  Involve the ancillary personnel and services appropriately

·  Ensure that the medical team members carry out their tasks appropriately

HEALTH ADVOCATE

·  Obtain procedures and interventions for patients

·  Complete necessary documentation for insurance purposes, or obtaining funding etc for necessary treatments

SCHOLAR

·  Understand the basics of adult acute leukemia, autologous transplant and the main classes of chemotherapy used in such cases

·  Use electronic and other literature sources to answer clinical and other relevant questions

·  Provide informal teaching to junior house staff and other members of the team

·  Use information technology to obtain information for scholarly pursuits

PROFESSIONAL

·  Demonstrate appropriate time management and responsibility

·  Ask questions appropriately

·  Apply ethical principles to the situations encountered
