PARKING

For safety reasons we request that parents park in Noongar Way. The school car park IS NOT to be used by parents for collecting or bringing children. The entrance to the Kindergarten is through the Noongar Way gate NOT THROUGH THE STAFF CAR PARK. Do not walk or drive through the staff car park.

ARRIVAL PROCEDURE

WE REQUEST THAT CHILDREN BE DELIVERED IN TIME FOR THE COMMENCEMENT OF THE SESSION at 8.50am

KINDERGARTEN CHILDREN NEED TO BE DELIVERED AND
COLLECTED BY AN ADULT NOT A SIBLING

BEGINNING SESSION

PLEASE BE ON TIME

The children’s Kindergarten session begins with a variety of activities followed by a ‘mat time’ (i.e. all the children sitting together with the teacher). During this time the day’s programme is outlined, new toys and equipment are introduced, rules and expectations are outlined and reinforced and the procedures for activities are demonstrated etc. This information is vital to the children’s understanding of the purpose of activities, rules and procedures and the efficient running of the centre.

DEPARTURE PROCEDURE

PLEASE BE ON TIME

PARENTS (OR GUARDIANS) ARE REQUESTED TO COLLECT CHILDREN PROMPTLY AT THE END OF THE SESSION, not only as a staff consideration but because small children may become distressed if they feel they have been forgotten. Your arrival should be 5 minutes before dismissal to ensure children remain calm and unworried. This is of considerable importance to the child and his/her security. Please note that children are not allowed to leave the Kindergarten unaccompanied and parents are asked to come to the verandah to collect their children.

Please complete the enclosed Release Form for other people to pick up your child from Kindergarten.

ATTENDANCE

From the beginning of Week 3 (Monday 13th February) the children will be attending Kindergarten full time (2 ½ days per week).

Parents are asked to send their children as regularly as possible for the continuity of the programme.

Please notify the school office if your child is absent for any reason.

A note is required if your child is absent for more than two days.

We are confident that the children will be able to cope well with full time attendance and we will ensure that the programme is designed to facilitate this.

Our finishing time is 2.50pm, 10 minutes before the primary school finishes to

Enable parents to collect their kindergarten child first.

NON-CONTACT TIME FOR TEACHERS

Fridays is the allocated day for non-contact time with the students for the class teacher. A substitute teacher will be allocated for teaching during this time.

WHAT TO BRING

The children will need to bring:

·  Morning tea - Children will need to bring vegetables, fruit, cheese, crackers etc to be shared with the group. Please DO NOT SEND SWEET FOODS.

Children will drink only water at Kindy.

·  Lunch - In their own box. Lunch can be sandwiches etc and can include a drink. Try to balance your child’s diet with healthy food.

·  Ensure that children can manage the food in their lunch box independently i.e. open all boxes, packets and drinks by themselves. Please include spoons, forks etc as needed.

·  Please make sure all containers, lunch boxes, lids and bases etc. are clearly named.

ORDERING LUNCH FROM SCHOOL CANTEEN

This is the responsibility of the parents. Lunch orders are to be placed in the Kindergarten canteen box and paid for before school starts. Please write the room number as Kindy 1 or Kindy 2. The canteen will send the lunches to the Kindergarten.

Please note:

·  Children cannot order from the canteen at morning recess.

·  Children cannot order ice creams from the canteen at lunch.

·  The Canteen is open Monday - Friday.

SUN SAFETY

Children will require a hat throughout the year as the school has a

“No Hat No Play Policy”

Sunscreen should be applied before leaving home as children will require sun protection whilst at Kindergarten.

PARENT HELP ROSTER

A roster for parents to fill in will be placed outside the centre. Parents are asked to come in on roster at least twice each Term. This provides an opportunity for you to see how your child is coping with the Kindergarten environment. Help during the morning sessions can be given by supervising activities, preparing fruit etc. While we appreciate it is difficult to find babysitters we request that parents make other arrangements for younger siblings on their roster day so they are “free” to spend this special time with their kindergarten child. Please only one parent helper per session time. Grandparents, Aunties, Uncles etc are most welcome to put their name on the roster.

Parents will be requested to complete a Confidential Declaration when helping at Kindergarten. A form has been included in this package.

Taking photos of children while on roster is NOT permitted.

- 4 –

LAUNDRY ROSTER

Laundry roster will be displayed and laundry will be sent home at the end of the week, it will need to be returned at your next Kindy session.

ONE PARENT FAMILIES

Throughout the year children are required to make gifts and write cards / letters to their parents.

If you are a single parent or separated, please let us know how you would like your child to address his/her card, gift etc.

For example:

“To Mum & Dad” together

“To Mum” and “To Dad” separately

“To Mum” only

“To Dad” only

PARENT - TEACHER COMMUNICATION

The teacher is only too happy to talk to you about your child or any aspect of the centre’s functioning but not during sessions. Please make an appointment.

The school newsletter will be sent home or emailed each Tuesday.

CONTACT DETAILS

It is really important that your contact details remain up to date. Please inform the teacher and school office of any change of address and telephone numbers.

P C PARENT COMMITTEE

The Kindergarten Centre is part of the Riverton Primary Campus P&C. Please support all initiatives and fundraising under taken by the school P&C.

BEHAVIOUR EXPECTATIONS

We request that parents assist us by ensuring that their children have acquired and can demonstrate the following pre-requisite behaviours when they commence Kindergarten:

Personal Care

The child should be able to:

·  Toilet him/herself, flush the toilet and wash their hands

·  Use tissues when necessary

·  Manage his/her own school bag i.e. open and close it

·  Eat his/her own food at lunch time and morning tea - you can facilitate this by ensuring oranges are cut into segments and/or peeled if the child doesn’t like the skin, containers (named) are easy to open and that spoons and forks are provided if needed

·  Dress themselves and put on and take off their own shoes and socks

AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOUR

Aggressive behaviour (physical and verbal) will not be tolerated as it curtails the rights, freedom and enjoyment of other children.

We will reinforce the above expectations in the Kindergarten and with your co-operation at home the maintenance of these behaviours will be greatly facilitated.

A well established foundation of basic, positive social behaviours will create a happy, relaxed and secure environment for the children and will enable us to concentrate on their personal and educational development.

HEALTH

IF CHILDREN ARE UNWELL WE REQUEST THAT PARENTS

KEEP THEM AT HOME

This is in consideration for the health and well being of other children and staff. Also an unwell child would not be capable of participating fully and enthusiastically in the programme and hence gaining full benefits. In the case of infectious diseases parents are asked to notify the centre and to keep the child at home for the length of time specified by the Doctor.

COMMUNICABLE DISEASES:

There are a number of communicable diseases that require exclusion from school for a defined period of time.

a) While suffering from early symptoms or during incubation period

b) When convalescing from the disease but still retaining infection

Class teachers are familiar with both the first and second, but as many parents do not know the exclusion period, the details are set out below.

Chicken Pox: Exclude from school. Re-admit at least five days after appearance of spots IF WELL. (Contacts not excluded)

Measles: Exclude from school. Re-admit on medical certificate of recovery OR at least 4 days after appearance of rash IF WELL.

Mumps: Exclude from school for at least 9 days after onset of symptoms.

Rubella: Exclude from school. Re-admit on recovery OR at least

(German measles) 4 days after the onset of symptoms or rash IF WELL.

Scarlet Fever: Exclude from school until child has received antibiotic

treatment for at least 24 hours and feels well.

Ringworm: Exclude from school until the day after treatment has commenced.

Scabies: Intensely itchy rash - excluded from school until the day after treatment commenced.

Impetigo: Sometimes called “school sores” - exclude until effective treatment (including proper use of occlusive dressings) has been instituted.

Head Lice: This is a recurring problem. Children may return to school once eggs have been removed and treatment has begun.

The school will advise you from time to time as such cases come to its attention, but you can assume the problem is always likely to be present. Parents should check children regularly. A pamphlet is available from the Public Health Department should you require further information.

- 6 -

If your child has one of the diseases / conditions mentioned on the previous page, please notify the school immediately. A clearance from your doctor would be desirable.

Note: These guidelines conform to the recommendation of the National Health and Medical Research Council, 1996 and published by the Health Department of WA.

MEDICAL CONDITIONS

If your child suffers from a medical condition of any kind or has a food allergy please notify the teacher and school office as medical forms will need to be completed. It is imperative that this information is updated regularly.

Also if your child is on a special diet or is not permitted to eat certain foods for religious or other reasons please let the teacher know immediately - in writing.

CLOTHING

Children will need to wear play clothes, something on their feet (no thongs / crocs) and a hat.

School hats can be purchased from the P & C uniform shop.

The school has a policy of “NO HAT NO PLAY”

Aprons supplied by Kindergarten are worn for activities such as painting but children’s clothes need to be suitable for outdoor as well as indoor play.

Please keep a spare set of clothes in your child’s bag at all times.

PLEASE LABEL ALL ITEMS OF CLOTHING SUCH AS JUMPERS,

COATS, FOOD CONTAINERS, DRINK BOTTLES AND HATS

WITH CHILD’S NAME

As a matter of safety it will be necessary for children to remove footwear before using the outdoor climbing equipment. We request that children wear non slip shoes to school.

Children will need a backpack to carry fruit, lunch, work, a change of clothes etc. These items should also be clearly labelled with the child’s name.

SCHOOL UNIFORMS

Uniforms are not compulsory but are available for purchase from the P&C Uniform Shop on Friday mornings (8.40 – 9.15 am) or order forms are available from the school office.

Kindy t-shirts and windcheaters are available.

BIRTHDAYS

We love to celebrate children’s birthdays at Kindergarten. If you wish to send in birthday cakes, SMALL INDIVIDUAL CUP CAKES are preferred as they don’t need cutting. NO party bags or other treats are permitted.

- 7 -

PARENTS ARE ASKED TO DISCOURAGE CHILDREN FROM BRINGING TOYS FROM HOME – they will not be allowed to play with them.
