HS.O.ADHI.3.3 / demonstrate measuring, estimating, ordering, purchasing and pricing skills. / Have students design and produce a chair out of heavy cardboard. Students will brainstorm and sketch out various possibilities of their design. After they create several thumb nail sketches, students will examine styles and building materials. During this phase students will use the visual ranking tool to determine the most important factors to understand when creating their designs. The will also use the seeing reason tool to define the factors and their exact impact on the designs. Students will select the best design and prepare a model and multimedia presentation. Presentations can take the form of multimedia, video or websites. Presentations will include a 3-d model or final professional drawings.
Lesson plan for this project is found at http://wvde.state.wv.us/intel/sample_units.html, go to the plan for grade_7-8_Art Design.
Divide the students into groups of three. Each group will play the role as a “design firm.”
Have each group research various seating devices, looking at different solutions other designers have created. They should research materials and feasibility of producing different seating devices.
Using this information, students will put together a research paper citing at least four different examples, and including images and descriptions of the seating devices they researched. Students should list pros and cons of the various designs and materials they have researched, listing their solutions to the perfect seating device.
