Soup Kitchen Suppers at Christ House – Margaret Zebrowski, Jan Jaynes
A hot meal is served to anyone in need of one at Christ House Soup Kitchen on S. West St. in Alexandria, on the 5th Wednesday of every month that has a 5th Wednesday. Meals consist of pizza from Marino’s Pizza and Subs, (1234 Jefferson Davis Highway, Alexandria), and desserts and salads from Alexandria Branch members who also serve. This is a very popular meal with the Christ House supper guests.
Scholarship Awards to T.C. Williams students – June Hajjar
The branch began presenting $500 scholarship awards to senior year students atT.C.Williams High School and eventually increased the Scholarship Award to $1,000. Now, members who wish to donate to the Scholarship Award may do so via a check written to AAUW, Alexandria Branch, memo-Scholarship Award and mail it to Virginia Kress, Treasurer. Members may alsoparticipate by reading scholarship applications in March.
Legal Advocacy Fund – Rance Willis
The nation's largest legal fund focused solely on sex discrimination in higher education, the AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund (LAF) provides funding and a support system to women fighting sex discrimination at colleges and universities. The Branch provides monetary donations through the Annual Blizzard of Funds (a phonathon to encourage each member to donate),raffles and fundraisers held throughout the membership year, as well as, via direct donations from Branch members.
Educational Foundation – Sylvia Linke
The Educational Foundation (EF) raises and distributes philanthropic funds to advance women's educational and career opportunities through fellowships, grants, and groundbreaking research. EF is the largest source of funding exclusively for graduate women. The Alexandria branch supports EF by earmarking $1 from the annual dues, encouraging individual donations, and, through fundraising events. Two annual Alexandria Branch events are devoted to raising money for EF: the holiday luncheon in December and the sponsorship of an evening of theater at the Little Theatre of Alexandria.
