The Pro-choice

Symbol:

M

any people recognise a woman’smoral authority to make decisions about whether she should continue a pregnancy. Many also believe a woman should have access to the information and services that would allow her to effectively manage her sexuality and fertility. In the context of Caribbean society, however, those views are frequently represented as being unpopular, even taboo.

By assigning an image to the pro-choice position—one that can be used on T-shirts and stickers, pins and bookmarks—we can declare our stance in the same way that someone with a red HIV/AIDS ribbon or pink breast cancer band does. We can tell the people around us “this is my view; let’s dialogue”.

The key shape was chosen since it’s a universal sign of independence. We use it as a symbol of people’s autonomy over their bodies. The F at the key’s base stands for “female” and “freedom”, reminding us that abortion is both a women’s issue and a human rights issue.
