Snow Removal and Sanding in Beadle County

Beadle County will initiate snow removal operations to maintain traffic as long as visibility is above minimum and weather conditions are such that plowing can be done safely and be effective for a period of time.

County crews will not clear private driveways or private property. Snow placed on a driveway by County plows where the driveway meets the road, is the responsibility of the property owner. County removal of this windrow is not feasible.

The County will sand only paved roads at intersections, curves, or steep hills. Other locations may be sanded if persistent icy conditions remain for a number of days.

All parts of the above information may be affected by at least one of the following which will delay all or some of the services provided:

1. Equipment breakdown

2.Vehicles disabled in deep snow

3.Weather so severe as to cause crews to be called in from County Roads.

4.Crew breaks, and breaks required for refueling and maintenance of equipment.

5.Unforeseen conditions and emergencies.

Personal Property

Mailboxes, fences or other items damaged during snow and ice removal are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Only those items that were damaged by actual contact with County equipment may be repaired at the County’s expense, provided they were located and installed properly.

The County is not liable for damage to fences, vehicles and/or other objects placed on County right-of-way.

Stranded Motorists

Plow operators may assist stranded motorists by contacting local law enforcement and/or emergency personnel. Plow operators will not attempt to remove a stuck vehicle unless directed by law enforcement or if the vehicle is creating a safety hazard on the road.

Winter Traveler Information Winter 2007/2008

511 Traveler Information:

By dialing “511” from any phone (cellular or regular) you can receive up to date, location specific road restriction, condition and weather information on any Interstate, US, or State Highway in SD and several adjoining states. You can also call 866-MYSD511 (866-697-3511). This info does not include County roads. For County road conditions call the highway department office.

Prepare for safe winter travel on all roads and highways:

The biggest problem with winter weather is that people sometimes get surprised by bad weather. People should listen to local radio broadcasts for weather and travel warnings, and plan to stay home when the weather is going to be bad. County plows will not be out to open roads during a winter storm, they will be sent out when conditions improve enough for the safe operation of the snow removal equipment.

Be Safe Around the Plows

In the winter, snowplow drivers are out on the roads to keep them clear of snow and ice and keep you safe. Here’s what you need to know about driving around snowplows:

  • Distance: Give snowplows room to work. The plows are wide and can cross the centerline or shoulder. Don’t tailgate and try not to pass. If you must pass, take extreme caution and beware of the snow cloud.
  • Speed: Snowplows travel below the posted speed limit. Be patient. Allow plenty of time to slow down. Remember, Ice and Snow, Take it Slow.
  • Vision: A snowplow operator’s field of vision is restricted. You may see them, but they don’t always see you. Keep your distance and watch for sudden stops or turns.
