Shivaji University salutes late Col. SantoshGhorpade-Mahadik

Satara, December 1: Shivaji University is proud of the courageous late. Col. SantoshGhorpade-Mahadik, who was shot to death in the terrorist's attack at Kupwara (Kashmir). The University will remember him forever and is committed to erect a centre in his inspiring memory in Satara, announced Prof. Dr. DevanandShinde, the Vice Chancellor of the University.

Dr. Shinde's visited late. Col. Mahadik's family at his residence at Pogarwadi (Satara) to convey his condolences on the demise of the ShahidJawan. He was much influenced to know that his mother and wife have decided to prepare her both children for the Indian Army. Dr. Shinde saluted their courage.

Vice Chancellor Dr. DevanandShinde lauded Col. Mahadik'sstrngth along with his courage. The same is shown by his family and that’s why he is impressed much. He has no words to express his sentiments. Col. Mahadik's memories will keep inspiring the generations to come.

Self Supportive Vocational Courses in mind for differently able: Vice Chancellor Dr. Shinde

Kolhapur, December 3: The University is thinking about to introduce the self supportive vocational courses for the differently able persons as per their need, Vice Chancellor Dr. DevanandShinde told at a special gathering organized at Shivaji University on the occasion of World Disabled Day.

VC Dr. Shindesaid, the differently able person may be lacking by their physical disability but they are naturally capable of doing, managing things much superiorly than the able one. He expressed his respect towards their honesty, loyalty towards their work and the institute as well. He said that he is of the mind to provide the skill set they required to carry fineness in their job and the personal life also. He urged them to come forward for any kind of skill development course, they require for it. The University will take responsibility for the things that need to be fulfilled. The next year function will be celebrated on the lawns of RajarshiShahu Senate Hall with fanfare, he promised.

University's SagarPawar Best Player at AI VC Cup Cricket Tournament

Kolhapur, December 4: Shivaji University's employee SagarPawar won the Best Player Trophy at the All India Vice Chancellor's Cup leather ball twenty-20 Cricket tournament recently concluded at Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh). SagarPawar, the captain of the SUK team, emerged as the Best Batsman of the series winning Man of the match title four times. He was also awarded a trophy for the Best catch of the tournament.

Twenty universities across the country participated in this tournament. Shivaji University team reached into the quarter-finals by defeating the teams of Gorakhpur University of Technology, the University of Ajmer, Himachal Pradesh University and University of Jalgaon. SUK became the first and only to enter into the quarter finals, winning all the matches in a row of the league round.But have to face defeat from the team of DeenDayalUpadhyay Gorakhpur University in this round. However, SagarPawar made his mark on the tournament by winning four Man of the match titles consecutively.

Today afternoon, the players met Dr. DevanandShinde, the Vice Chancellor along with the trophies. The Vice Chancellor was impressed to know the achievement made with sparing a little time to practice. Congratulating the team he appealed to keep on practicing consistently for the greater success. SUK students develop app with navigation details to 281 colleges

Kolhapur, December 5: Students from SUK's computer science department have developed a mobile phone navigation application which provides the location details of 281 colleges in Sangli, Satara and Kolhapur districts. It uses mapping from Google maps and the university is planning to take permission from the company.

Third-year MCA (master of computer application) student and project team leader Nikhil Vharamble, told that the idea was conceived by vice chancellor D B Shinde. He added that the team worked on the idea for nearly a month.

"Our six-member team made sure that the application has a unique identity considering that there are other online maps available. All of us had different duties, from technical support to data collection and coding. We have successfully tested as well," he said.

He said that the application also provides contact details of the college and an official.

"One can see navigation from their location to the desired college with one click. Users can set a reminder to visit a location," he added.

Head of electronics department R K Kamat told that the app is soon to be available in the Google play store after clearing the legal issues.

"Though the maps are available through the open source, we need to take permission from Google for academic usage of the maps," he said. The university had earlier asked colleges to coordinate with the committee collecting location coordinates.

The university, through circulars on September 5 and 10, had asked colleges under its jurisdiction to cooperate with the committee formed to collect the location coordinates of the colleges for the application.

Navigation app features

*Will have coordinates (latitude and longitude) of 281 colleges in Kolhapur, Sangli and Satara districts.

*Will be created in accordance with international database of the maps, such as Google maps

*Six-member committee has collected coordinates from the colleges

*The app will help in bringing the colleges online with their location with just one click

* This app will prove resourceful and helpful for knowing the whereabouts of the educational institutions in the division for parents, students and other stakeholders

Vice Chancellor congratulates DKTE for National Award

Kolhapur, December 10: Dr. DevanandShinde, Vice Chancellor of Shivaji University congratulated the DKTE Institute's Engineering College for its achievement of National Award. The institute has been recently awarded as 'Best Chemical industry linked and Allied Engineering Institute (UG)-2015' after a nationwide survey of 2161 institutes carried by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) collaboratively.

Mr. PrakashAwade, the former Minister and Director of the Institute, Prin. Dr. P.V. Kadole today visited VC's office to greet him personally. Pleased with the achievement of the institute Dr. Shinde appealed DKTE to establish an Incubation Centre for textiles, where all kind of facilities be provided under one roof for the businesses and industries.

SUK to host ICSSR workshop in March

Kolhapur, December 16: The Department of Sociology of Shivaji University is in process of organizing a workshop on Research Methodology for SC, ST research students, in association with Indian Council of Social Sciences and Research, New Delhi (ICSSR) in March, 2016, told the co-ordinator Dr. JaganKarade to Shivsandesh. This will be a 10 days activity and will be conducted during 1st to 10 March of 2016.

As told by Dr. Karade, the course on ‘Research Methodology in Social Sciences’is designed to impart knowledge for scientific research to integrate qualitative and quantitative approaches in research and orient the young researchers to new advancedtechniques for precise, rational and scientific research. It also aims to train the scholars with advance statistical packages including SPSS for using in various fields and sub fields of social sciences. It is particularly meant for those who are engaged in survey research and have some basic knowledge of data processing, analysis and interpretation.

One purpose of the courseis tomake aware & helpthe concern scholars with basic features of computerized database management system and simultaneously concentrating on the usage of computers in data analysis and data interpretation.

He told that the course would include a combination of theoretical lectures and respective practicalon computers and a few commonly available and need based computer applications for quantitative and qualitative analysis of the databoth. The delegateswould be given some research project and the data generated would be used for application of various statistical concepts and techniques. It will be from simple uni-variate to more complex multi-variate techniques of data interpretation. Excel and SPSS both would be used for data processing andanalysis.

The course will be operated through theoretical lectures and practical applicationsof different research modules and statistical techniques. The participants will be provided withsome data generated and computers for application of discussed research methodology. Group participation, field survey as well as research paper writing techniques would also be executed as per the itinerary of the event, told Dr. Karade.

Objectives of the Course:

1. Philosophy of enquiry and scientific knowledge.

2. Social science research designs and techniques.

3. Data collection and data analysis

4. Use the Statistical Package in Social Science research.

Avishkar fest sees over 150 scientific models

Kolhapur, December 18: Over 150 scientific models were presented during the university-level round of the Avishkar research festival at the Shivaji University, Kolhapur (SUK) on Friday.

D R More, director of the Board of Colleges and University Development (BCUD), said that the teachers have a major responsibility of motivating students to study and research socially-driven topics.

He added that quality of research needs to be improved and they should have social relevance.

"The people alone will not be able to make the country a superpower; we will need innovative and creative research topics and that is where research guides and supervisors play a vital role in helping students know about the current requirements," he said.

The district-level Avishkar research festival began with a rousing response in Sangli, Satara and Kolhapur districts from December 15. Winners from the district and university-level will compete at the next round which will be held on December 22 at the campus. Winners will then advance to the state-level research festival which will be organised next year.

The festival is organized in six educational categories, which include Humanities, commerce, pure sciences, agriculture and animal husbandry, engineering and technology, and medicine and pharmacy. The festival is categorised for undergraduate (UG) students, Postgraduate (PG) students, research scholars and faculty members.

Kolhapur, December 30: Shivaji University paid tributes to Dr. AppasahebPawar, the first Vice Chancellor, on his death anniversary.

Dr. DevanandShinde, Vice Chancellor of the University paid his tributes by garlanding Late Dr. Pawar's photo at the Main entrance of the Administrative building. SUK students explores the spirit of research at Anveshan Fest

Kolhapur, December 30: The students and researchers of Shivaji University today explored the spirit of research at the 'Anveshan Research Festival-2015' organized at Department of Technology (DoT) in association with Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi.

Dr. GirishKulkarni, the Director of DoT inaugurated the festival. He said, one has to find solutions on various social issues and requirements through research only if we want inclusive development of the nation. He emphasized on the need to develop research culture into the UG students also.

The competition was conducted in five main categories viz. Agriculture, Basic Science, Engineering & Technology, Life Sciences, Pharmacy and Social Sciences, Humanities, Commerce and Law.

The winners in various categories are as follows: Agriculture-ArjunArunKadam (R.I.T., Islampur), Basic Science-Prashant D. Ghotane (Dr. Ghali College, Gadhinglaj), Engineering & Technology- Sanket S. Mane (RIT, Islampur), Social Sciences, Humanities & Law-OmkarSuhasTembe (KBPIMSR, Satara), Life Science, Pharmacy-Prajakta S. Khopade (TatyasahebKore College of Pharmacy, Warana Nagar). University to correspond with Colleges through email only!

SUK's New Year resolution; Provides official Id's to all

Kolhapur, December 31: In a bid to move to the digital platform, the Shivaji University, Kolhapur (SUK), will make official communication paperless, starting January 1, 2016.

In a circular on December 30, the University asked all its affiliated colleges to use the official email for communication henceforth. This has been made mandatory by the university.

According to Vice Chancellor Dr. DevanandShinde, all colleges have been assigned separate email IDs for this purpose and have been strictly asked to appoint an authority to keep the email ID in use.

Dr. Shinde told that he wanted the communication to be paperless and what other way is better than email for this purpose. University's IT cell has created separate email IDs which have been already conveyed to the colleges and he was quite hopeful that they will be used.

Dr. Shinde said that this is an eco-friendly initiative as the amount of paper used for official communication will decline drastically. This will also eliminate conventional problems like not receiving courier or mail.

He added that the University and colleges exchange a lot of information throughout the academic year and any delay can disrupt many things.

With this new initiative of University the colleges are bound to play their role efficiently. Shivaji University has as many 282 affiliated colleges across Kolhapur, Sangli and Satara districts, which will be a part of the new change in official communication.
