PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Hello everyone! Summer is finally over and we are busy planning for some interesting events for you in the year ahead.

We had our first board meeting on September 3 and discussed some of the logistics of holding such events, especially the annual professional seminar and the student night in March and April 2015 respectively. We want you to be a part of these events and hope you will make every effort to attend them. As you know, the annual professional seminar is held every year to provide a service to members to bring them current on the latest and newest developments in the internal audit profession and we aim to provide general as well as government-related topics that help our members earn CPE hours at a very affordable price. Our student night is held to induct graduating juniors/seniors into the profession as well as educate undecided graduating seniors about the many opportunities the profession has to offer. We also discussed holding a CAE Roundtable and we shall be contacting the CAEs to enlist their support in holding such an event. In particular, we would like to hear from you as to what topics you would like covered in such a CAE Roundtable. We are having a breakfast meeting on October 8th. Please refer to page 2 for additional details.

As you know, we hold our lunchtime seminars on the third Thursday of a month, between 12 Noon and 2 PM at the Holiday Inn Gateway Hotel in Torrance and try to arrange topics that relevant to you as internal auditors and speakers that are leaders in their profession. Our goal is to continue these lunchtime seminars this year and try to solicit support from you as to what topics you would like covered. We are cognizant of the constraints on your time and want to make these events more successful by seeking your input and support. The goal of these lunchtime seminars is to provide, affordable and relevant seminars in a central location that all our members can attend. Effective October 2014, the Chapter shall provide this service to you at $35 per member ($40 for non-members, $30 for retirees and free for students and the unemployed), which covers the current cost of the meals provided at the events at no profit for the chapter. We are always looking for organizations to underwrite some or all of the cost of the meals for such an event and would appreciate receiving gift cards to be given to our members as part of a raffle at such events. Should your organization be interested in supporting our chapter in any way, please let us know.

We are in the process of updating our chapter website and we plan to add a calendar of planned events to help you stay current with the upcoming events. Please check the website periodically and let us know what other topics you would like to see on the website. Also, our newsletter is another resource for you that provides current information about chapter events.

An update on the IIA Western Regional Conference in the fall of 2016! If you or a fellow member would like to participate in any committee formed for this purpose, please contact Kathy Knoxat or Stephen Germain . As you know, our chapter leaders have already provided several volunteers who will participate in the various committees that are being formed to help make this Western Regional conference a great success.

Thanks. -Sher Shah, President, IIA-Beach Cities Chapter

Operational Auditing –

One increasingly important audit requirement that adds value to an enterprise (company or public entity) is Operational Auditing. In performing an Operational Audit, the audit function is in a unique position to influence total enterprise integration from both a top-down and bottom-up perspective contributing to improved operational performance. Improvement in operational performance contributes to the enterprise bottom line.

Operational Auditing examines the infrastructure of functions or departments and their collective ability to achieve strategic and tactical objectives based on established metrics. An operational audit evaluates the maturity level of each function or department and its ability to integrate across enterprise. The higher the maturity level the greater the enterprise performance.

Regardless of the company or public entity there are a number of fundamental areas this session will explore as well as how the audit function may add value to the enterprise through:

 Enhanced integrated operations;

 Reduced enterprise risks;

 Identification and reduction of waste across the enterprise;

 Forecasting enterprise performance.

Takeaways

 Operational Audit approach

 Alignment

 Challenges and tactics to succeed

 Process and procedures

 Continuous improvement tactics

 Skills and knowledge

 People motivation
