EL 221 Communicative Business English 1

Course Description

All four skills will be practiced with the emphasis on business-related articles and texts.

Students will read before making summaries and express their opinions at a paragraph level to promote their analytical skills. There will be practices on listening for main ideas. Speaking practices and oral presentationson business related-topics will also be included.

Course Objectives

1. To improve students’ listening skills with in-class listening practices and assignments.

2. To develop students’ oral and presentation skills

2. To improve students’ vocabulary and reading skills.

3. To improve students’ writing and grammar.

4. To enable students to effectively function in an international business culture.

Available at the publisher’s stallon the ground floor of the SC building (Rangsit) during the first week of the semesterand at TU Bookstore (Tha Prachan)

Retain this book if you intend to enroll in EL 321 because the second half of the book will be used then.

Exam Dates

Midterm Examination Sunday, 11 October 2015Time: 12.00 – 14.00

Listening and Final Examination Friday, 11 December 2015 Time: 13.00 – 16.00

Oral Presentation

Before the midterm exam, students form a group of three or four to be responsible for an oral presentationon a business-related topic (to be announced by the teacher.) The oral together with power point presentation should last 10-15 minutes.Points will be awarded based on the quality of their presentation (content, language, and manner of presentation).

Written Exams

The midterm exam covers Chapters 1 and 3 while the final exam covers Chapters 2 and 4. Sections in the book such as About business, Vocabulary, Grammar and Writingwill be included in each written exam.

Listening Exam

The listening exam will be administered at the beginning of the final exam. The VDO clips that will appear in a part of the listening exam are available at SALC. Make sure you have studied the materials before you come to the listening exam.

Attendance Policy

1. Students are required to participate in at least 80% of the total classhours. They

can be absent only three times before the midtermexam and three times before

the final exam.

2. One point will be deducted for each absenceof a 1.30-hoursession, and two

points will be deducted for each absence (of a 3-hour session).
