FISHERIES TECHNICIAN (2)
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Bonaparte Indian Band is recruiting for a Fisheries Technician. This dynamic position includes three areas of responsibility: 1) conducting technical fisheries work, 2)promoting fishing and communicatingfisheries information to the community, and 3)helping to coordinate community fishing efforts.
The Fisheries Technician reports to the Director of Natural Resources and will work with a diverse team of youth workers, community health workers, and contractors.
In this position, the successful candidate will be involved in a wide range of responsibilities including:
-Operation and maintenance of fish enumeration projects,
-Data collection, transfer, and quality control for enumeration projects,
-Lead fish habitat field assessments, project development, and budgeting,
-Coordinate or assist to coordinate community events that promote fishing such as workshops and demonstrations, events for the youth group, etc.,
-Write proposals, track progress, and report on fisheries related projects,
-Catch monitoring of community fishing effort during salmon harvest,
-Develop, assess, implement and educate on fisheries management, protection, conservation, preservation,
-Attend meetings with organizations affiliated with BIB Fisheries and distribute information from meetings to Council and Community,
-Fisheries management that includes social/traditional values,
QUALIFICATIONS:
Must have:
-A valid B.C. driver’s license and a reliable vehicle,
-Occupational First Aid level 1,
-Combined training and experience in fisheries management,
-Knowledge of fish enumeration and reporting,
-Understanding of basic fish habitat sampling and restoration techniques,
-Understanding of basic fish sampling techniques,
-Physical fitness to be capable of fieldwork such as lifting, walking river banks, etc.,
-Must pass a criminal record check.
Experience in the following would be considered and asset:
-Post-secondary education in Fish and Wildlife or a related field from an accredited college or university,
-High School Diploma,
-Knowledge of Bonaparte Indian Band fisheries resources and traditional territory,
-Experience in supervising staff and contractors,
-Experience with writing proposals, funding applications, and project reports,
-Experience in budgeting, tracking expenditures and filing expense reports,
-Demonstrated ability to promote teamwork and work as a team member,
-Previous work experience with the BIB Natural Resources department
-Flexibility and innovation.

Length of Employment & Wage Range:
Length of employment will be determined seasonally (Typically from June 1st – November 15th).
Wage: $16-$20 / hour dependent on qualifications and experience
