ROCKIN’ ALL OVER THE WEALD WITH KENT MUSIC SUMMER SCHOOL

A new course in which young people can get the inside track on playing in a rock band is being launched at this summer’s Kent Music Summer School.

The Commercial Music Course, for intermediate and advanced musicians aged 8-19, will help young people to develop their skills playing within a rock band or contemporary music group and to develop their knowledge of song writing, home recording, promotion and other aspects of band life.

The residential course runs from Saturday 16 July to Monday 18 July at Benenden School, near Cranbrook and costs £180.

Phill Hyde, who manages the summer school, said: “This course will focus on traditional rock and pop instruments (guitar, keyboards, bass and drums) and voice, though we are happy to take students on other instruments wishing to explore alternative genres in the commercial music field. The finale of the course will be a concert which will be recorded for students to take away as a souvenir of what they’ve achieved over the three days.”

Also new for this year, the Song Writing Course, on Wednesday 27 July and Thursday 28 July, goes into more detail on song structures, arrangements, lyric writing, musical textures and voicings. The Song Writing Course makes a perfect complement to the Commercial Music Course and costs £120.

Both courses will be run by musicians with considerable experience and expertise as performers and writers in the recording industry. Anyone can apply for a place and there are no auditions.

Benenden School offers exceptional facilities on a 240-acre parkland site in the heart of Kent. Recreational facilities include a swimming pool, tennis and squash courts as well as an on-site shop. Students are provided with mainly individual rooms, high-quality catering, and are looked after by a team of experienced supervisors, qualified nurses and lifeguards.

Discounts are available for parents booking more than one child or a child attending multiple courses. Kent Music can write to school heads to support your request for release days.
