The Biblical Use of The Shofar
Copyright 2005 Rick Kurnow
In the Old Testament the Shofar was used to:
1. Gather God's people at Mt.Sinai.
Exodus 19:13
When the trumpet sounds long, they shall come near the mountain."
Exodus 19:16,17
16 Then it came to pass on the third day, in the morning, that there were thunderings and lightnings, and a thick cloud on the mountain; and the sound of the trumpet was very loud, so that all the people who were in the camp trembled.17 And Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain.
The blast of the shofar, known as the trump of God.This sound caused great fear and reverence when God came down upon Sinai to establish His covenant with the people.
The sound of the Shofar calls us close to Yeshua and reminds us of the new covenant that He has established with all the people of the earth. We can come to Him in reverence and godly fear.
2. Proclaim liberty in the year of Jubilee.
Leviticus 25:9,10
9 Then you shall cause the trumpet of the Jubilee to sound on the tenth day of the seventh month; on the Day of Atonement you shall make the trumpet to sound throughout all your land.10 And you shall consecrate the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a Jubilee for you; and each of you shall return to his possession, and each of you shall return to his family.
Just as the Shofar was the signal of God gathering His people to himself when He came down upon Sinai to establish His covenant with His people , so the same sound announced, at the close of the great day of atonement, after the evening sacrifice, the year which restored to the people the freedom and the blessings of the covenant.
The sound of the Shofar reminds us of the liberty that we have in Yeshua. He has established the new covenant with us and we receive liberty as we receive the total forgiveness of our debt of sin. And now we are heirs of the blessings of His covenant.
3. Break down walls and bring the defeat of their enemies
Joshua 6:2-5
2 And the LORD said to Joshua: "See! I have given Jericho into your hand, its king, and the mighty men of valor.3 You shall march around the city, all you men of war; you shall go all around the city once. This you shall do six days.4 And seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark. But the seventh day you shall march around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets.5 It shall come to pass, when they make a long blast with the ram's horn, and when you hear the sound of the trumpet, that all the people shall shout with a great shout; then the wall of the city will fall down flat. And the people shall go up every man straight before him."
Joshua 6:20
20 So the people shouted when the priests blew the trumpets. And it happened when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat. Then the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.
When the shofars were blown and the people shouted the walls came down and their enemies were defeated.
Today we can blow the Shofar and make a shout of victory and every wall that satan and others have built will come crumbling down and our enemies will be defeated.
4. Celebrate the Ark ofthe Covenant.
2 Samuel 6:15
15 So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouting and with the sound of the trumpet.
David and all the nation of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with jubilee and the blowing of the Shofar. This expressed the sound of jubilee and the joyous shouting of the people.
The Ark of the covenant represented the presence of God and always brought the blessings of the covenant to God’s people. When the Shofar is blown we can rejoice, shout and celebrate just like David did for the presence of God has been established in us and we are recipients of the blessing of the New Covenant established through Yeshua.
5. Rally the people for war.
Jeremiah 4:5
Declare in Judah and proclaim in Jerusalem, and say: "Blow the trumpet in the land;
Cry, 'Gather together,' And say,'Assemble yourselves, And let us go into the fortified cities.'
Jeremiah 6:1
"O you children of Benjamin, Gather yourselves to flee from the midst of Jerusalem!
Blow the trumpet in Tekoa, And set up a signal-fire in Beth Haccerem;
1 Samuel 13:3-4
3 And Jonathan attacked the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. Then Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, "Let the Hebrews hear!"4 Now all Israel heard it said that Saul had attacked a garrison of the Philistines, and that Israel had also become an abomination to the Philistines. And the people were called together to Saul at Gilgal.
Saul blew the shofar throughout all the land proclaiming liberty from the oppression of the Phillitines and rallying the people together to fight and bring about the defeat of their enemy. The first blast was blown in the places nearby and a signal fire was lit. A second blast was blown, then answered in a more distant locality along with a signal fire, this way the proclamation was sent quickly throughout the whole country to call the people together to fight.
The sound of the Shofar calls us to rally together to break the oppression that the devil tries to bring upon us. We will not tolerate his oppression any longer. We will fight and secure our liberty that has already been given to us in Yeshua. We will allow the all consuming fire to ignite our lives and draw people together to serve God.
6. Overcome the enemy.
Judges 7:19-21
19 So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the outpost of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just as they had posted the watch; and they blew the trumpets and broke the pitchers that were in their hands.20 Then the three companies blew the trumpets and broke the pitchers -- they held the torches in their left hands and the trumpets in their right hands for blowing -- and they cried, "The sword of the LORD and of Gideon!"
When Gideon and his men blew the Shofar they were declaring the defeat of their enemies.
When the Shofar is blown we declare the defeat of satan and his demons. We declare that our victory has been secured through Yeshua.
7. Stop fighting among brethren.
2 Samuel 2:26-29
26 Then Abner called to Joab and said, "Shall the sword devour forever? Do you not know that it will be bitter in the latter end? How long will it be then until you tell the people to return from pursuing their brethren?" 27 And Joab said, "As God lives, unless you had spoken, surely then by morning all the people would have given up pursuing their brethren."28 So Joab blew a trumpet; and all the people stood still and did not pursue Israel anymore, nor did they fight anymore.
Joab used the sound of the Shofar to stop the people from fighting among eachother.
When the Shofar is blown it will stop division among the brethren and call the people to stop fighting and come together in unity.
8. Warn of judgment for sin.
Ezekiel 33:3-6
3 when he sees the sword coming upon the land, if he blows the trumpet and warns the people,4 then whoever hears the sound of the trumpet and does not take warning, if the sword comes and takes him away, his blood shall be on his own head.5 He heard the sound of the trumpet, but did not take warning; his blood shall be upon himself. But he who takes warning will save his life.6 But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, and the people are not warned, and the sword comes and takes any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at the watchman's hand.'
The sound of the Shofar was used to warn the people to repent and turn to God to stop judgment from coming on the people because of their iniquity.
When the Shofar is blown it is a reminder that we must turn away from our sin and turn to God because through Yeshua, He has delivered us from the wrath to come.
9. Warn of the coming Day of the Lord
Joel 2:1
Blow the trumpet in Zion, And sound an alarm in My holy mountain!
Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble; For the day of the LORD is coming,
For it is at hand.
The trumpet of God will sound as a warning of the coming day of judgment.
When the Shofar is blown we know that Yeshua is coming soon and this world will be judged as well as our enemy satan and his demons.
10.Announce the establishment of a king.
1 Kings 1:34
34 There let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him king over Israel; and blow the horn, and say,'Long live King Solomon!
2 Kings 11:12
12 And he brought out the king's son, put the crown on him, and gave him the Testimony; they made him king and anointed him, and they clapped their hands and said,"Long live the king!"
2 Kings 11:14
14 There was the king standing by a pillar according to custom; and the leaders and the trumpeters were by the king. All the people of the land were rejoicing and blowing trumpets.
The blowing of the Shofar recognized the authority of the king as established by God.
When the Shofar is blown it establishes Yeshua as the King of Kings and acknowledges His authority over our lives.
11. Declare a New Beginning.
Numbers 10:10
10 Also in the day of your gladness, in your appointed feasts, and at the beginning of your months, you shall blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings; and they shall be a memorial for you before your God: I am the LORD your God."
Psalm 81:3
3 Blow the trumpet at the time of the New Moon,
At the full moon, on our solemn feast day.
The blowing of the Shofar was used as reminder to approach anything that was done for God with thanksgiving. And to declare a new beginning,
When the Shofar is blown it is a reminder to us that when we begin anything or offer anything toGod that we must do it with thanksgiving. Everyday Yeshua gives us a new beginning let us begin with thanksgiving.
12.Accompany the song of the Lord.
2 Chronicles 29:26-29
26 The Levites stood with the instruments of David, and the priests with the trumpets.27 Then Hezekiah commanded them to offer the burnt offering on the altar. And when the burnt offering began, the song of the LORD also began, with the trumpets and with the instruments of David king of Israel.28 So all the assembly worshiped, the singers sang, and the trumpeters sounded; all this continued until the burnt offering was finished.
The Shofar was blown as an act of worship while the Levites were operating in their ministry before the Lord.
When the Shofar is blown we can enter into worship as we present ourselves as living sacrifices to God through Yeshua.
13. Gather people to worship
Isaiah 27:13
13 So it shall be in that day:
The great trumpet will be blown;
They will come, who are about to perish in the land of Assyria,
And they who are outcasts in the land of Egypt,
And shall worship the LORD in the holy mount at Jerusalem.
Isaiah declares that the Trump of God will sound and people will gather together to worship God.
When the Shofar sounds it is a call to gather ourselves to God to enter into worship.
14. To Praise & Worship God
Psalm 47:5-6
5 God has gone up with a shout, The LORD with the sound of a trumpet.
6 Sing praises to God, sing praises! Sing praises to our King, sing praises!
Psalm 98:6
6 With trumpets and the sound of a horn; Shout joyfully before the LORD, the King.
Psalm 150:3
3 Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet;
The Shofar was used in worship on many occasions. Many of them are recorded in the book of Chronicles. 1 Chronicles 13:8,15:24-28,16:6,42 and 2 Chronicles 5:12-13,7:6,13:12-14,15:14,23:13,29:26-27
When the Shofar is blown during times of worship we exalt Yeshua declaring Him as our King and we prepare our hearts to receive the habitation of His presence.
In the New Testament the Shofar is used to:
1. Declare the Lord’s Return
1 Thessalonians 4:16-18
16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.18 Therefore comfort one another with these words.
2. Gather God’s people to Himself
Matthew 24:31
31 And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
1 Corinthians 15:52
52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the deadwill be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
3. Declare Judgment on the earth
Revelation declares six times Angels sound the Shofar bringing six different
plagues on the earth.
Revelation 8:7 – Vegetation destroyed
Revelation 8:8- The seas struck
Revelation 8:10- The waters struck
Revelation 8:12- The heavens struck
Revelation 9:1- Locusts
Revelation 9:14- 1/3 of the people of the earth struck
4. Declaring the establishment of God’s Kingdom
Revelation 11:15
Then the seventh angel sounded: And there were loud voices in heaven, saying,"The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever!"
The Sounds of The Shofar
There are different types of sounds made by the Shofar which carry different meanings. These are some of the sounds used today in worship.
Tekiah: A low to high pitch transition starting with a hard short push on the low pitch and then a slight sustain on the high pitch ending with a burst.Signifying God asking
Shevarim: Three short low to high pitch notes in a row. It is like three short tekiahs without the burst at the end. Signifying being broken before God
Teru'ah: Nine staccato notes or more blown in rapid succession at a medium pitch. Signifying a cry for mercy also used to shout with victory and jubilee when that mercy is received. Also used as a call to arms a warning of impending danger
Shevarim-Teru'ah: The combination of the last two sounds. Signifying Repentance and a turning away from your sin
Tekia Gedolah: (The Great Blast) A long drawn out note held as long as possible. Starting out with the low to high pitch and ending with a burst. Signifying the drawing of God's people to himself. Based on Exodus 19:13 "When the shofar sounds long, They [the People] shall come up the mountain."
The History of the Shofar
There are two types of trumpets used in the Bible. The Shofar or ram's horn. (Plural Shofrot)The ram’s horn is used because it is a reminder of the ram offered as a sacrifice by Abraham in place of his son Isaac in The Akeidah (the Binding of Isaac).
The Shofar is mentioned over 80 times in the bible as either a ram's horn or trumpet. The Shofar is made of a hollowed out horn of a ram or an ibex or any other horned animal that is kosher for food consumption. The exception to this rule is the horn of a bull or cow, which is not allowed to be made into a shofar since that would bea reminder of the sin of the Golden Calf committed by the Jews in the desert of Sinai.
The second most commonly used horn is the Yemenite shofar taken from an African antelope called the Kudu, taking the place of the silver trumpet.Which is mentioned in Numbers 10:1-10.The Hebrew word for the silver trumpet is Chotzotzerah. The Chotzotzerah (Plural Chotzotzerot) were made of brass and silver overlaid on a mandrel and hammered into shape.Today, since the temple does not exist, the use of the silver trumpet is almost unknown. In its place, the Yemenite horn is used.
