ELL Poster #18–What is Happening in the Pond?
Look at the poster with the children and have them list verbs that describe what is happening in the poster. Then have the children use the list in simple sentences or full sentences depending on their skill proficiency.

Use one set of Word Cards (ELL Teaching Guide pg 124) plus several Word Cards from previous weeks. Divide children into teams of X and O. Draw a tick-tack-toe grid on the board. Tape the Word Cards next to the grid. Players take turns taking a Word Card off the board and using the word in a complete sentence. If a player uses the word correctly he or she draws a X or O on the grid and give you the Word Card. If the player uses the words incorrectly, he card is put back on the board, and the other team takes a turn. The game ends when a team has three X’s or O’s in a row, or all the grid spaces have been filled.
Reading Comprehension / Today we are going to be talking about Compare and Contrast of the story
Frogs. When you compare and contrast things, you tell how they are alike
And different.
How are the bodies of a one-month old tadpole and a two-month tadpole
alike? The bodies are alike in that they don’t have outside gills. They both
have tails.
How are tiny frogs different than tadpoles? Tiny frogs can live on land while
Tadpoles live in water. Tiny frogs don’t have tails while tadpoles have tails.
Tiny frogs eat insects while tadpoles only eat plants.
How do the front and back feet of a frog differ? There are four toes on each
front foot. The back feet are webbed and have five toes.
How do frogs use their powerful legs differently on land and in water?
A frog uses its powerful legs to hop, leap, and jump of land. A frog uses
Its legs to push its body through water.
Grammar and Writing / Adjectives that compare
definition:
Add –er to an adjective to compare two persons, places, or things. Add
-est to an adjective that compares three or more persons, places, or things.
A dog is smaller than a cow.
Smaller compares two things – the dog and the cow.
If you see a cow, a dog, and a frog, the frog is the smallest of the three.
Smallest compares three things – the cow, the dog, and the frog.
Have children write some sentences that compare the frog and the toad (page 84). Use adjectives that compare.
Readers / Introduce the book The Panda Gift. Read the title and look at the picture on the cover.
Name animals that you might see at the zoo..
Preview the reader by talking about the pictures and naming the labeled items.
Review the high frequency words that appear in this book: wonderfuland powerful.

Read the book aloud to students as they follow along. Pause to verify comprehension and to explain unfamiliar concepts.
After pages2-5 ask the students:
