Situation:
The YMCA of Medicine Hat can trace back its roots more than 50 years. Currently, the YMCA of Medicine Hat serves over 5000 people in Medicine Hat and surrounding communities.
With a staff complement more than 100 full and part-time people, combined with more than 500 volunteers and donors, and an operating budget of $4 million, the YMCA of Medicine Hat serves over 5000 annual members and participants through its two Health Fitness and Recreation Branches (Downtown and South Ridge), as well as the YMCA Employment Centre, YMCA Camp Elkwater and 2 licensed YMCA Child Care Centres.
The YMCA of Medicine Hat serves over 500 day campers at the YMCA Downtown Branch and YMCA South Ridge Branch. As well as 100 residence campers at the YMCA Camp Elkwater, in our summer programs.
YMCA Child Care Centres serve approximately 85 children with full time child care, with our unique Playing to Learn program.
YMCA Employment Centre serves members of the community in Medicine Hat, Cypress County, Brooks, and County of Newell offering employment and career services to assist individuals in meeting their personal and professional goals.

What qualification are we looking for?
At the YMCA of Medicine Hat, we strive to ensure our employees are a good fit based on their strengths, interests, and future goals.
The successful candidate will have the following:
  • Accounting degree or diploma and minimum 2 years of full cycle accounting experience with strong technical skills is required;
  • Experience working in a not-for-profit or charity organization using restricted fund accounting is an asset;
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains; previous experience with Great Plains Accounts Payable module is an asset;
  • Supervisory experience is an asset;
  • Ability to manage the integration of multiple software systems, including spreadsheets;
  • Excellent communication skills that facilitate working effectively with individuals from all levels of the organization;
  • Highly organized team-player with great attention to detail and accuracy;
  • Quick learner with a good work ethic;
  • Ability to type with minimum speed of 45 wpm;
  • Previous experience with data processing and entry;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook;
  • Evidence of a clear Police Record Search with Vulnerable Sector Check, within the last six months

What does this role look like at the YMCA of Medicine Hat?
The Accounting Technician will:
  • Complete all tasks for daily payment processing of membership/programs
  • Enter donations revenue
  • Set up/maintain vendors in Great Plains
  • Review and enter invoices into Great Plains and process vendor payment on a timely basis
  • Process payroll (enter hours, verify time sheets)
  • Bank deposits
  • Participate as a team member in special projects where accounting expertise is needed (e.g., DfM)
  • Work collaboratively with the off-site YMCA of Calgary Finance and HR team using a shared services framework to improve the Association’s efficiency, internal controls and accountability
