Activity #1
Thoughts and Words
[Talk about God | Bible Story Review]
Made to Imagine: an activity that promotes empathy and facilitates biblical application through role-play and reenactment
What You Need: “Thoughts and Words” Activity Pages, pencils, crayons
What You Do:
Give each kid a “Thoughts and Words” Activity Page.
Set out the pencils and coloring materials.
Guide kids to look at what the people in the illustrations are saying. Encourage them to make an educated guess about what those people were thinking during those scenes.
Guide them to write or draw those thoughts in the bubbles.
They can color the pictures when they’re finished.
What You Say:
“There was a big difference between what our characters in the Bible story said and what they were thinking! David was saying that he was on a special mission from the king, but he was thinking that he needed to run away from Saul. Ahimelek was saying that he was innocent, but he was probably thinking that David had lied and caused all this trouble. Ahimelek’s son said that Saul had gotten rid of all the priests, but he was probably thinking that it was all David’s fault. David discovered for himself that [Bottom Line] when you’re not truthful, you hurt others. How do you think he felt at the end of the story? (Allow for answers.)
“Sometimes the gap between what you think and what you say ends up being a lie. Like you might tell your babysitter that you can stay up until nine, but in your head you know your parents’ rules about early bedtimes on school nights. Or you’re saying to your friend that it’s totally okay if she borrows your sister’s sweater because you’re late to the movie and just want to get there, but you’re thinking your sister be really angry if she finds out.
“What would happen in those situations if your parents found out the babysitter let you stay up too late, or your sister saw your friend wearing her favorite sweater? Who would most likely get in trouble or be blamed? Yep, the babysitter and your friend. They didn’t do anything wrong. They honestly believed that everything was fine. How would you feel if that actually happened? (Allow for discussion.) [Bottom Line] When you’re not truthful, you hurt others.”
