Assembly & Location of the Pet Waste Station

Assembly : If you get the pet waste station unassembled:

  • Attach the box to the post at the height desired using the two metal bolts provided. Two holes have been drilled in the box, and you will need to put the starter holes in the post where you wish the box to be bolted.
  • Attach the sign to the post above the box using the two fasteners provided.

Location:

  • Choose a location near the dog-walk area. To make sure there are no gas, cable or other lines beneath the area where you want to dig a hole to install itcall 811 to get your utilities in the area of the pet waste station marked with paint by the utility companies prior to digging. It will take 72 hours for this to be done.
  • We recommend a trash receptacle either be attached to the station, or be nearby.
  • To draw attention to the pet waste station, advertise its location with a poster, flyer, newsletter, website, TV announcement, etc.
  • Consider putting another sign at your facility with an arrow that points in the direction of the pet waste station that will call attention to its existence.

INSTALLATION OF YOUR PET WASTE STATION

Installation: You will need a post hole digger, bag of concrete, and water.

  • Dig a 2’ or 3’ hole using a post hole digger. If 2’ hole is dug, after the post is put in the ground, fill around the post with concrete (Quik-Crete) and amount of water called for. Let it set before filling the hole with dirt and tamping it down. Usually a 3’ hole will hold the post in place upright, but to be sure it does not move or can be pulled down, utilize the concrete.

LCSC ITEMS PROVIDED & ADDITIONS YOU CAN MAKE

Add-Ons:Usage of the station will increase if you provide a trash receptacle beneath the station. Construction, provision, and maintenanceof this trash receptacle will be your responsibility.

  • A photo of a well constructed trash box that holds a trash bin is attached.
  • Daily removal of bags of pet waste is essential, especially in warm weather.
  • Dispose in your facility’s dumpster or trash.

Freebies:

  • Pet Leash Bag holders will be provided by the Lexington Countywide Stormwater Consortium to your location. These are basically “golf towel holders” but they attach to a leash by a clip and hold a plastic bag. Make them available to dog owners at your front desk or other display, but do not allow them to take more than one per dog. Pet owners can also reload the leash bag holder with a grocery bag to use when walking their dogs in other locations.
  • One roll of pet waste station bags (200) will be provided to get you started using the station. After that roll is used, you may choose to order your own bags using the website that is on the bags (best price available). Also, plastic grocery bags can be put in the box and taken from the top of the box rather than through the hole in the bottom.

REPORT USAGE OF YOUR PET WASTE STATION

Decreasing the amount of animal fecal waste that is washed into our waterways from the ground through the nearest stormdrain when it rains is a best management practice for reducing non-point source water pollution. Our National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit requires that Lexington County and the other municipalities in the consortium that are under the permit report practices in use that work toward this reduction to DHEC annually. Please let us know by December of each year how many bags are taken from your pet waste station (how manyrolls of 200 bags you replace in a year or how many grocery store bags you put in that are removed.
