SEMINOLE COUNTYCTST MOCK DUI PROGRAM

The Seminole County Community Traffic Safety Team has been conducting Mock DUI eventsfor the junior and senior class of each of the seven Seminole County Public High Schools and area private schools since 1998. This volunteer program has received international recognition and several awards.

The mock crash scene takes students through each step of the fatal crash beginning with two high school students leaving for a date, saying goodbye to the DUI victims’ parents. When the “crash” occurs, the students are witness to the frantic 911 call made by classmates, and then the real time steps taken by law enforcement and EMS/Fire Rescue. The students’ watch the emergency medical professionals utilize the Jaws of Life to extricate the injured and prepare the victims for transport in an ambulance and an air rescue helicopter. They see the EMS team has determined that the passenger in the second vehicle is deceased and they watch as the driver who is suspected of driving under the influence attempts to accomplish the requirements of the various roadside sobriety tests. The students watch the crash scene investigation as Law Enforcement Officers gather evidence supporting the DUI charge. Occasionally, during all of the activity and commotion, the students are reminded of the parents of the deceased who are totally unaware that their daughter has been the victim of a fatal DUI crash. They see the funeral home “bag” the body to load in the hearse and then they watch as the approaching law enforcement officer knocks on the door with the terrible task of notifying the parents of their daughters’ death. Once the scene has calmed and the crash scene has cleared, the students will see and hear from two local families who have suffered the results of a DUI crash. As they leave the stadium, they will pass by their “deceased” friends casket and her various articles of memorabilia.

The students are required to write a brief paragraph concerning the event, their thoughts and how it affected them.

This Educational program is produced, conducted and supported entirely by volunteers from the Seminole County Community Traffic Safety Team.
