Linguistic Validation Project:
English for People with clostridium difficile infection, Crohn's disease, or IBS.

This project involves another aspect of translation—called localization—which has to do with tailoring a translation and the language in it to a specific target country or area of the world.
The text has already been translated into Cantonese, and now we need ten native speakers of Cantonese in Hong Kong who can participate in the evaluation of it.
Project Requirements
All participants must have clostridium difficile infection, Crohn's disease, or IBS. The project is 512 words in length and pays $60 US (460 Hong Kong dollars) to each person who participates. All participants must be at least 18 years old.
Clostridium Difficile Infection (CDI)Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is a symptomatic infection due to the spore-forming bacterium, Clostridium difficile.[2] Symptoms include watery diarrhea, fever, nausea, and abdominal pain.[1] It makes up about 20% of cases of antibiotic-associated diarrhea.[1] Complications may include pseudomembranous colitis, toxic megacolon, perforation of the colon, and sepsis.[1]

Crohn's Disease
Crohn's disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that may affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract from mouth to anus.[2] Signs and symptoms often include abdominal pain, diarrhea (which may be bloody if inflammation is severe), fever, and weight loss.[1][2] Other complications may occur outside the gastrointestinal tract and include anemia, skin rashes, arthritis, inflammation of the eye, and tiredness.[1] The skin rashes may be due to infections as well as pyoderma gangrenosum or erythema nodosum.[1] Bowel obstruction also commonly occurs and those with the disease are at greater risk of bowel cancer.[1]

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a group of symptoms—including abdominal pain and changes in the pattern of bowel movements without any evidence of underlying damage.[1] These symptoms occur over a long time, often years.[2] It has been classified into four main types depending on whether diarrhea is common, constipation is common, both are common, or neither occurs very often (IBS-D, IBS-C, IBS-M, or IBS-U respectively).[1] IBS negatively affects quality of life and may result in missed school or work.[7] Disorders such as anxiety, major depression, and chronic fatigue syndrome are common among people with IBS.[1][8]

The interviews will be conducted in-person at a time and location which are convenient for those taking part in the project. The location could be a café, a library, a hotel lobby or the participant’s own home. There should be no telephone costs for the participants, as the interviewer will be calling them to set up the times and conduct the interviews.
The compensation for participation will be sent electronically by bank transfer or PayPal soon after the interviews for the project have all been completed.
The Interview
A subject will:
1. receive the questionnaire by e-mail, fax or post from the interviewer;
2. review the questionnaire in their own time, making note of any language which is unclear to them;
3. have an in-person interview of 30-45 minutes in length in which the interviewer will go over each question of the questionnaire, asking the subject to paraphrase the Cantonese (put it in his/her own words) to make sure that everything is properly understood. The subject can also provide comments about anything else he/she thinks would be difficult for someone in Hong Kong to understand.
