A RESOLUTION adjourning the Senate in honor of Dr. John P. Marsden, the tenth President of Midway College.

WHEREAS, the Board of Trustees of Midway College selected Dr. John P. Marsden to serve as the tenth President of Midway College. After a nationwide search, the top three finalists visited the campus in October 2012, and met with members of the board of trustees, staff, faculty, students, alumni, and community members. The Board of Trustees chose Dr. Marsden as the new President of Midway College. Dr. Marsden and his lovely wife Margaret relocated to Midway, Kentucky, from Wilson, North Carolina, where he had served as the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs of Barton College. Officially, he began his tenure as Midway College President on February 1, 2013, where he and his wife were warmly welcomed; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Marsden graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with his undergraduate degree in Architecture with a minor in Industrial Management and earned his master's degree in Architecture and a Graduate Certificate in Gerontology from the University of Arizona in 1993. In 1996, he received his M.S. degree with a major in Environment and Behavior, and the following year, he received his Ph.D. with a major in Environment and Behavior and a minor in Gerontology from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, Michigan. Dr. Marsden specializes in research and writing in the follow areas: dementia, assisted living, and evidence-based design, and is the author or co-author of four books and numerous other publications; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Marsden has had a distinguished career as a top-level administrator at Barton College in Wilson, North Carolina, from 2011 until 2012 and at Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, from 2007 until 2011. At both institutions, he was Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. At Barton College, he was also Professor of Gerontology and Major Gifts Team Member, while at Mount Mercy University he served as the Head of University Strategic Planning from 2009 until 2011 and as Professor of Psychology from 2007 until 2011. His background and expertise as an administrator, strategic planner, researcher, and educator provide him with the capabilities to ensure that Midway College has an excellent future that meets the needs of the students; and

WHEREAS, Donna Moore, chairperson of the Search Committee, believes that Dr. Marsden's experience, academic background and personality will make him an excellent President for Midway College where he will "help develop and implement a long term strategic plan for the College." On his part, Dr. Marsden was honored to be selected President of Midway College, which provides students a professionally-oriented liberal arts education that prepares them for leadership, service, and outstanding citizenship. Dr. Marsden is dedicated to working collaboratively with the board of trustees, faculty, staff and students to "build a vision for the College based on its solid foundation";

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

âSection 1. The Senate does honor and commend Dr. John P. Marsden, an outstanding administrator, educator, researcher and author, upon his selection as the tenth President of Midway College and welcomes Dr. Marsden and his wife to the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

âSection 2. When the Senate adjourns this day it does so in honor and recognition of Dr. John P. Marsden and his wife, Margaret Marsden.

âSection 3. The Clerk of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Senator Alice Forgy Kerr for delivery.
