Dear Chris Lambie:

I am writing this letter in regards to your summer job posting for the position of "Summer Laboratory Technician" (Job # 10-234-3). As your employee, I believe that my experience as a laboratory technician will provide you with the skills and competence that you require for the position.

Though I came to the University of Oklahoma to study English (particularly technical writing), I have considerable experience and training in laboratory work. Between the years of 1992-1996, 1 worked as an environmental chemist at Midwest Research Institute in Kansas City, MO. My laboratory experience focused upon monitoring a variety of matrices for the presence of dioxin and polychlorinated biphenyls. This work often involved ultra-trace analysis using small volumes (mL). I offer you my training in handling and preparing samples with strict attention to detail and cleanliness in whatever project you are analyzing.

As manager of the dioxin laboratory, it was my responsibility to plan and schedule work assignments, collect and assemble necessary chemicals and equipment, and work in the laboratory as well as meet deadlines, disseminate information, and solve problems. As your employee, I can perform a wide variety of laboratory tasks for you with minimal training or supervision.

In addition to my laboratory skills, I have experience in data capture and management assignments using computer software, maintaining laboratory notebooks and documents, and writing laboratory reports. Whether delivering project information in speech or writing, you can be sure that I will communicate it in an accurate, clear, and concise manner.

Thank you for taking the time to review my application. Please contact me at your earliest convenience to schedule an interview for this position.

Sincerely,

James Heiman
