Grading Policy:
Formal Assessments (Tests, Projects, Final Essays, Research Paper/Project)
Informal Assessments (Quizzes, Classwork, and Writing Journal)

Late Work Policy & Retake Policy:
- 10 points a day will be deducted for everyday that an assignment is late.
- 5 points will be deducted from assignments turned in with no name.
- Students will be given the opportunity to make test corrections for partial credit. However, students must see Mrs.Lutz to receive the test correction paper, which will need to be filled out completely in order to receive partial credit. These test corrections need to be completed within a week of the day the graded tests are given back to students.

- 3 Ring Binder with 5 Subject Dividers (Daily Oral Language, Notes, Classwork, Stems, and Homework)
- Research Paper Folder (3 Prong Pocket Folder)
- Pencils
- Colored Pencils and/or Markers
- Highlighter/Notebook Paper
1st9 Weeks: Theme- Finding Common Ground
Novel: To Kill a Mockingbird
We will cover the following literary elements:
- Point of view/purpose
We will focus on the following types of writing:
- Arguments/evidence
- Write narratives
- Individuals/events/ideas
- Central ideas/themes/summary
- Academic discourse/collaboration
- Vocabulary strategies
- Conduct research
2nd9 Weeks: Theme- Heroes and Quests
Novel: The Odyssey
We will cover the following literary elements:
- Text structure/organization
- Content in diverse media
We will focus on the following types of writing:
- Write to inform/explain
- Clear/coherent writing
- Plan/revise/edit
- Gather/synthesize information
3rd 9 Weeks: Theme-The Bonds Between Us
Novel: Animal Farm
We will cover the following literary elements:
- Central ideas/themes/summary
- Vocabulary/word choice
- Text structure/organization
- Write arguments
- Use technology in Writing
- Present findings
- Use media
- Figurative language/word relationships
4th 9 Weeks: Theme-Sweet Sorrow
