Shared/Teacher Directed Reading Fiction Text / Guided Reading/Small Flexible Groups / Working with WordsPurpose: explicitly teach reading comprehension skills and strategies that are aligned to the NCSCOS and enable students to interpret, analyze, and evaluate text
Examples: inference, compare/contrast, main idea/details, sequencing, generalizations, literary elements, character analysis, point of view / Purpose: teach students to apply decoding and comprehension skills while reading a variety of text at their instructional level; students also work on fluency to assist their comprehension of text / Purpose: teach word recognition skills, word building strategies, new vocabulary words
Time Management: 25-35 minutes daily / Time Management: 20-25 minutes per group / Time Management: 15-20 minutes daily

Materials: Reading Assignments flip chart (Comprehension Strategies) grade level basal, age/grade appropriate class sets of literature, poetry, drama / Materials: leveled text / Materials: spelling/phonics, high frequency words, word walls, word patterns, content words
Shared/Teacher Directed Non-Fiction Text / Self-Selected Reading / Teacher Read-Aloud
Purpose: explicitly teach comprehension skills strategies and text structures using expository materials
Example: content area materials / Purpose: teach students to read for personal enjoyment, develop background knowledge, and increase vocabulary skills (includes conferencing with students about their reading) / Purpose: model the characteristics of good readers and share an enjoyment for reading,
increase vocabulary skills and develop background knowledge
