b. A.A. Pre-Major Advisor. The evolution of this is great. Evelyn Lora-Santos is a mover and a shaker. She is the new Campus Director of Advising. Evelyn has implemented divisional liaisons. Our A & E liaisons are Tina Crane and Martie Berrios Garcia. Meetings will be planned soon between these divisional liaisons and our program chairs. Tina and Martie have fantastic ideas and Wendy is really excited about them.
c. The Board of Trustees meeting.
1. The BOT meeting is tomorrow 2/26 at 8:30am. Roger Corriveau, Ralph Clemente, Raul Valery, Wendy Givoglu, and Dr. Johnson will be attending this meeting tomorrow on West Campus.
2. The East Campus new Film/Sound and Music Technology building is #1 on the agenda. There is a Dr. Shugart memo in support of this new building and a white paper for our talking points.
3. Allan Bortoff, the new vice president for Facilities will be presenting on our behalf.
4. The BOT meeting is a public meeting that anyone can attend. All information that transpires in these meetings is online.
5. A reporter will be on standby at tomorrow’s meeting re: the new building. UPDATE: As of 12:59pm on 2/26 we have been apprised that the BOT approved our new building. Yea!!!!!!!!
d. Evans High School. There is potential for a 1 million dollar Sound and Music Technology grant. Evans High School has a 25 seat midi lab. The next step will be to engage with Career Pathways which would help in establishing college credit in high school via submitting a portfolio. After Spring Break, there will be a big Dual Enrollment meeting.
e. Bachelor’s Degree. A Converged Communications/Integrated Communications degree is the proposed BA. Dr. Shugart will pitch the idea of this degree to UCF to see if they are in conflict with the idea. If UCF gets prickly about it and rejects the idea, there is talk that we might roll the idea into an AS degree. J This is exciting too!
f. Budget/Equipment/Hiring updates.
1. We did a fabulous job in completing these points on our Unit Plan especially while Wendy was away. Wendy commended us on a job well done and recognized that it was a lot of scurrying to meet deadlines. Wendy will send out an AS equipment list. Wendy believes that our strategic equipment lists will likely get approved.
2. Wendy indicated that hiring will be limited next year because of lower enrollment. She stated that not all retirement positions are getting filled and that is has become kind of a shell game.
3. The Band Director position will be advertised through HR. It is a conversion position. 4. The New Student Experience faculty is receiving HR’s hiring focus right now to meet the new requirements. Conservative staffing and hiring will be the trend.
g. Audiences Everywhere workshop. It focused on ticket sale strategies and patron identifying and building. This workshop was sponsored by United Arts. The speaker was an ASU faculty member with extensive experience in patron building/management. Wendy sent out an email containing the notes and slides from this workshop.
h. New Student Experience course. Michael Shugg and Rob McCaffrey have been very active in the development of this new course. It resembles the Survey of Entertainment Tech course. On 3/21 the following program chairs: Kristy Pennino (AS) and Troy Gifford (AA) and Wendy Givoglu will also be representatives in the design phase of this course.
III. Instructional Materials Review Form.
a. Since we are smaller and are not ordering a lot of books, we have an advantage regarding the new instructional materials procedures. However, we still must be informed and compliant with new policies. We must strive to keep our textbook selection equal and affordable.
b. The Certification of Text Book form must be completed by every full-time faculty including 8 month contract faculty.
c. Use of faculty authored text/material must be approved by the committee and sold through the Valencia bookstore.
d. Picking a new text book requires: 1) submitting of form, 2) explaining why, 3) approval of committee, 4) Dean’s office will keep record of these requests online on our Department share drive.
e. Valencia has already been audited regarding our textbooks. One class from Arts and Entertainment was audited and successfully the syllabi matched the textbook used.
f. There will be no A & E division meeting in March. Instead Wendy will meet with the program chairs for a “fancy” meeting to discuss our strategy for managing the new instructional materials procedures. We must be aware of the policy and engaged in dialogue regarding the materials we will use.
IV. Planning.
a. Taste of Learning. Donna Marino is asking for art contributions for the Taste of Learning fundraiser that is held for the Valencia Foundation. Everything for this fundraiser (food/wine/silent auction materials) is donated. Donna Marino would love any art pieces we are willing to donate. The commitment for art to be donated is April 1, 2014. The Taste of Learning is on May 17, 2014.
b. East Campus Open House. The East Campus Open House will be on April 26, 2014 from 10am – Noon. This is the Saturday before grades are due. J It has traditionally been a successful event. Wehave to have A & E representation in some fashion. Think about what you, your adjuncts, and your students can possibly do for this event.
c. East Orlando Chamber of Commerce. (ECOC) It is a Chamber of Commerce that serves people who live and/or work on this side of town. Valencia’s Mike Bosley is the newly installed president of this Chamber of Commerce. He and his team will be hosting an ECOC event on the Valencia East Campus. The topic of this ECOC event will be the arts which is one of his organizations pillars. 5-6pm there will be a reception held in the atrium and there will be an art exhibit in the Wooten Gallery. Mike is hoping to have our programs showcased at this event. Mike would like to see it be a big event. Date of event?????
V. Faculty Senate update from Kristin Abel.
1. There are a lot of policy workshops happening lately.
2. The Internship Office is hoping to brand a new program called Introship. Not sure when this program will be implemented.
3. Treatment of Adjuncts was a recent presentation at the Faculty Senate.
a. Focus of this presentation was: better treatment, better pay, and the gaining of privileges based on longevity/seniority.
4. Faculty Association Constitution Workshops have been taking place. The last conversation of the intended new constitution will be on 2/27 from 1pm-2pm in EC 8-120.
