Context
Across the UK, more than 1 in 6 people of all ages live with the pain and disability of arthritis. The impact is enormous and so much more needs to be done. Arthritis Research UK is determined to change things and improve the quality of life for people living with arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions. By 2020 our aim is to have made a positive and tangible change to the quality of life of people with arthritis and we are committed to building and extending our work with professionals to achieve this.
The Strategic Development Directorate is responsible for developing a range of new person-centred services, building our work with a range of health and fitness professionals, piloting new approaches to meeting our strategic goals, and understanding the impact of our work.
The Professional Engagement Manager will work with the Head of Professional Engagement to shape the delivery of a programme of impactful work to engage, inspire and educate professionals to deliver high quality care and support to people with arthritis and other musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions.
Main purpose of the role
The Professional Engagement Manager operates as part of a growing Professional Engagement team (currently 3, growing to 5 this year), This role is responsible for contributing to the development of our professional engagement and education portfolio which will support Arthritis Research UK’s professional ‘alumni’ members to access development opportunities that drive the spread and adoption of best practice for people with musculoskeletal conditions. This includes extending the reach of our learning package ‘Core skills in musculoskeletal care’ aimed at GPs and other healthcare professionals and developed in partnership with The Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP).
You will work collaboratively with the Head of department to expand the team and develop our strategic work plan. This includes developing our ‘alumni’ network model, and shaping insight activities with key audiences to inform our engagement and education work with GPs, physiotherapists and fitness professionals. Working closely and collaboratively with colleagues across the charity you will help to ensure that our work is integrated and the opportunities for cross-team working maximised.
Building on the work of our current programme of activity that focuses on GPs and nurses in primary care, the post holder will scope and maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders to raise the awareness of the charity, work in partnership, and consult on the development of the services we offer. You will engage with and develop influential relationships with a range of health and social care education providers, healthcare providers, professional bodies, commissioners and other charities.
This role will provide management of a professional engagement and education portfolio for professional audiences. Operating with confidence in health and social care settings, the post holder will be responsible for nurturing and developing our work with the RCGP to offer online courses to primary care audiences. You will work collaboratively with the Head of department and other teams to shape our strategic engagement of different professional audiences and identify opportunities to grow our professional ‘alumni’ model insight activities. You will scope out opportunities to reach other priority professional audiences, including those in primary care, physiotherapists and fitness professionals, to equip them with the information and resources needed to deliver great care for people with arthritis and other MSK conditions.

This role will have a significant externally facing/representational component:
·  Proactively engaging with health, social care and other professional audiences, at all levels, representing the organisation, and engaging these contacts in pursuit of the Charity’s strategic goals.
·  You will need to be authoritative; able to build complex relationships and facilitate a relationship with the Charity that reflects reciprocity
·  The post holder will need to build strong relationships with a wide range of external organisations (healthcare commissioners, care providers, other charitable organisations) to understand their operating context, constraints and concerns to enable effective partnerships to develop
Internally
·  This role will work closely with the Head of Professional Engagement to shape and grow the team.
·  You will need to build effective relationships across the organisation, especially with Services, Impact and Evaluation, Policy, Fundraising, Research and the Communications, Digital and Brand teams.
·  The role will share expertise and intelligence with colleagues and teams, developing insight and feeding this back to the organisation. In particular, you will need to work closely with Policy and Research colleagues, exchanging information and ensuring a joined up approach in terms of stakeholder engagement, management and influence.
·  As a manager, you will be expected to contribute fully to the leadership and management of the team.

2 / To develop and deliver a wide ranging programme of strategic long term engagement services with our primary professional audiences (health, social care, fitness professionals).
3 / With the head of department and colleagues, review and develop the current professional network offering and oversee the implementation of a growth strategy and testing of new services. This could include managing the rollout of our new ‘alumni’ offering, leading on the production of the quarterly alumni’ newsletter and being the internal champion for the CRM database with responsibility to ensure compliance with data protection for professional contacts.
4 / To identify, commission and deliver other relevant pieces of work that have been agreed as priorities with the directorate.
5 / To plan, lead and deliver a range of strategic networking activities (e.g. attendance at conferences, representation on groups); acting as an ambassador for the organisation, and identify speaking opportunities for other colleagues.
6 / To build upon existing and deliver new educational projects (e.g. e-learning, blended learning and signposting/accreditation of existing and new CPD education programmes), tools, events, networks and potentially funding (e.g. bursaries) for professional audiences that enables them to deliver good care and support to people with arthritis. To oversee efficient administration processes (including, potentially legacy and/or grants and awards to professionals).
7 / Working with our content manager, to ensure expert and lay panel members, authors and reviewers are in place to support the development of content for professional audiences.
8 / To keep up to date with health and social care policy and the changing health and social care landscape that affects the way services are delivered
